YETI® LoadOut® for transport, storage and the wash

What is YETI LoadOut? The brand's gear range, made up of waterproof GoBox hard cases and a bucket that holds 19 litres. Nothing here keeps anything cold. In detailing, your chemicals ride along in the box, and with a lid, seat and belt pouch the bucket becomes a mobile wash station.

YETI® LoadOut® is the transport and storage range from the Austin, Texas maker. It includes the GoBox gear cases with a sealed hard-shell body and the 19-litre LoadOut bucket, plus a lid, seat top, dividers and belt pouch as add-ons. Unlike Tundra and Roadie, there's no insulation in the walls. The range keeps things dry and organised, and it survives a tumble off the boot sill.

• Waterproof here really does mean sealed. The GoBox closes with a gasket running around the lid groove and two latches that pull the lid down against it. For you that means the bottle of wheel cleaner that pops open on the drive to a customer stays a problem inside the box, not on the boot carpet.
• 19 litres that don't flex. The LoadOut bucket keeps its wall stiffness even when full and has a textured base that stays put on wet paving. You notice it when the handle doesn't cut into your hand as you carry it and the wall doesn't bow inwards.
• The bucket becomes a workstation. Lid, seat top and belt pouch all lock into the same rib pattern on the outer wall. In two moves you've got a seat for wheel work and a holder for brushes and spray bottles, with no screws or glue.

Detailing1's tip from the shop: We get plenty of questions about using this bucket as your only wash bucket. That's where the maths stops working. A single bucket collects all the dirt you take off the paint, and you then dunk your wash mitt straight back into it. Plan for two from the start, one for the shampoo solution and one for rinsing. And measure before you order a grit guard: the thick walls eat into the inside diameter, so a standard insert for five-gallon buckets won't automatically fit here.

LoadOut cools nothing and still keeps everything together

LoadOut is the part of the YETI range with no insulation. This is about transport, order and getting your kit there in one piece.

The brand made its name with cool boxes, and you can see that heritage in the range. The same thick-walled injection moulding, the same heavy-duty latches, just without the foam layer in between. What keeps drinks cold in Tundra® by YETI® and Roadie® by YETI® keeps tools dry in LoadOut.

The rest of the family keeps things cold; LoadOut handles logistics. It isn't a side product but a line of its own with its own accessory world: dividers for the boxes, lids and seat tops for the bucket, pouches for the outer wall. You'll find the full brand range under YETI®.

The range found its way into car care by a detour. Originally built for anglers, hunters and tradespeople working off a pickup bed, it landed in the detailing scene because the same demands apply there: wet gear, aggressive chemicals, transport in the boot and ground that's rarely level.

What we at Detailing1 see again and again: the bucket gets bought first, usually to replace a cracked one. The first GoBox often follows months later, once the collection of bottles, pads and towels no longer fits in a box you'd still want to carry.

Why the hard shell takes more than a DIY-store bucket

The difference isn't the material, it's the wall thickness and the way the parts are moulded.

A standard DIY-store bucket is drawn thin-walled and optimised for stacking. It bulges when you carry it, and after a few years in the sun the handle mount snaps. The LoadOut bucket is injection-moulded with thick walls and stiffened on the outside with ribs running all the way round, which work like the girders of a bridge. In practice it keeps its shape even when it rides brim-full on the tow bar.

On top of that there's UV stabilisation in the plastic. These are additives that intercept sunlight before it cuts through the molecular chains in the polymer. Without that protection, plastic left outdoors goes chalky and brittle after two summers. Day to day that means the bucket can stay outside by the car without the handle tearing off the next time you lift it.

On the GoBox cases, the gasket makes the difference. It runs all the way around the lid groove, and two latches pull the lid down against it. Dust stays out, splash water stays out and spilled chemicals stay in. That last point is the one that matters in detailing, because wheel cleaner on boot velour costs more than any box.

The case bottoms are shaped so the next box locks on top instead of sliding. In the boot that's the difference between a packed stack and three boxes that go their separate ways at the first junction. If you load up regularly, you'll notice this faster than any material spec on the data sheet.

We'll be straight about two things. First, it's all heavy – an empty LoadOut bucket weighs noticeably more than its thin-walled cousin. Second, the box is waterproof, not submersible; it's built for stowing, not for going under. If all you want is a bucket for rainwater, a basic model will do you fine.

From the mini case to the big GoBox

The number in the name rises with the volume. The sizes run from a small-parts case to a box for your entire kit.

The YETI LoadOut® GoBox 1 Gear Case (Mini) is the case for everything that otherwise rattles around loose: applicator pads, spare spray heads, a coating bottle that has to stay upright. It fits in the glovebox and seals so tightly that an opened bottle won't wreck it.

One step up is the YETI LoadOut® GoBox 15 Gear Case (small). It takes a set of hand tools for interior cleaning – detailing brushes, brushes, towels and two or three spray bottles. If you only do the odd top-up detail and don't haul a machine around, that's all you need.

The YETI LoadOut® GoBox 30 2.0 Gear Case with Carry Strap is the best-selling middle size. It swallows a weekend's worth of bottles, carries on the shoulder strap, and the reworked second-gen latches open even with wet hands.

At the top sits the YETI LoadOut® GoBox 60 Gear Case (large). A dual-action polisher plus pads, polish and panel wipe fits in without anything piled on top of each other. For mobile detailing it's the box you pack once and leave that way.

The YETI LoadOut® GoBox Divider — partition for the „LoadOut® GoBox" keeps the inside organised. It splits the compartment so upright bottles don't topple at the first bend. The difference between a sorted box and a tipped-out one doesn't show when you pack, it shows twenty minutes later when you're hunting for something.

With accessories, the bucket becomes a wash station

The YETI LoadOut® Bucket / 19 Litre Bucket is the heart of the range for anyone who washes their own car.

19 litres is the classic five-US-gallon size, and it's no accident that half the detailing world works to it. At that fill level the shampoo solution stays stable through a full wash, and the wash mitt dips deep enough to rinse itself free instead of scraping along the bottom.

The YETI Bucket Lid / Lid for the „LoadOut® Bucket" turns the bucket into a transport box. Chemicals ride along without sloshing, and after the wash there's no open standing water left to grow a biofilm over the week. If you store the bucket outside, it saves you rinsing it out before every use.

The YETI Bucket Swivel Seat / lid seat for the „LoadOut® Bucket" is the part that makes the most sense in detailing and the one most often forgotten at checkout. Wheels, sills and the lower door edge are all at knee height. The seat swivels with you, so you follow the wheel round without standing up and crouching down again.

The YETI Bucket Utility Gear Belt / belt pouch for the „LoadOut® Bucket" wraps around the outer wall and keeps brushes, spray bottles and towels within reach. Anything in the pouch isn't lying on the ground, so it doesn't pick up gravel you'd otherwise drag onto the paint next time you grab it.

Together that's the system idea behind the range: one base body, defined ribs and a rim that everything clicks into. You decide how far to go and can add to it later without replacing the base.

Two buckets, a grit guard and the right order

The two-bucket method is the simplest way to avoid picking up swirls while washing. One bucket holds the shampoo solution, the second just clean rinse water.

The routine never changes: mitt into the solution, one pass on the paint, mitt into the rinse bucket, wring it out, back into the solution. The sand you've just taken off the paint stays in the rinse water. Without that second bucket, the same grains would ride back over the clear coat on the next pass – and that's exactly where the fine circular marks you see in raking light come from.

A grit guard at the bottom boosts the effect, because settled dirt stays under the grid and doesn't get stirred up every time you dunk. YETI doesn't make a grit guard itself, and the thick walls eat into the inside diameter. So measure before you order a standard one. Matching bucket and insert combos are under Bucket.

Before either bucket comes the pre-wash. Whatever foam and the pressure washer have already taken off never makes it into the wash mitt. The full process from pre-wash to drying is under car washing.

Water temperature is the second underrated point. Lukewarm water activates shampoo better and softens bug remains more than ice-cold water from the garden hose. It mustn't be hot, though, because warm paint makes the solution dry on before you rinse it. In the thick-walled bucket you can hold the temperature through the whole wash.

Wheels get their own bucket, and that's no exaggeration. Brake dust is made of metal shavings and sintered pad wear – exactly the stuff that scratches clear coat. Once a bucket has seen wheel water, it never becomes a paint bucket again with us, and that lesson was expensive to learn.

Even when nothing seems to happen, something does: every wash with a single bucket lays another layer of fine marks into the clear coat. It only shows after months, on a sunny day, and by then the answer is a polish rather than a second bucket.

Who LoadOut is worth it for, and who can skip it

The decision comes down to one question: does your kit move around, or does it live in one place?

If you go to the car rather than the other way round, this is where you get the most out of it. The YETI LoadOut® GoBox 60 Gear Case (large) takes machine and chemicals in one trip, and the YETI LoadOut® Bucket / 19 Litre Bucket travels with its lid on as a closed box and turns into a wash station on site.

For weekend care on your own driveway, you need a lot less. Bucket and lid cover the core, and the YETI LoadOut® GoBox 15 Gear Case (small) keeps brushes and towels together. Everything else you can add once it's clear what you're actually missing.

And if all you want is a bucket that holds water, you don't need this range. We'll say it openly: for that, a basic model does the job, and the money is better spent on a good wash mitt and a grit guard than on bucket wall.

The sensible way in is the bucket with a lid. That gives you wash vessel and transport container in one, and after the second wash you'll know yourself whether you're missing the seat top or the belt pouch. We recommend that order more often than the complete package in one go.

The first time you set up, bucket, grit guard, foam lance and two spray bottles take about ten minutes of sorting. From the third time on, your station is ready in three minutes because every part has its place. That's the point where organised kit pays off – not at checkout.
