Choosing the right polishing pad with ZviZZer

ZviZZer polishing pads are a well-thought-out pad system of thermo foam pads in five firmness grades plus wool, microfibre and velour pads. Firmness, size and shape decide how much cut reaches the paint. For anyone who'd rather pick the right pad on purpose than guess.

Polishing pads by ZviZZer are the tools between machine and paint that take up the polish, press it evenly onto the surface and carry away friction heat. More than 20 variants share the same open-cell thermo foam core and a hook-and-loop back. The foam pads come in five colour-coded firmness grades, joined by wool, microfibre and velour pads. Made in Germany. Firmness controls how aggressively a pad works.

• Five grades, one colour logic. 5 colours assign every foam pad to its job, from blue (Ultra Hard, max cut) through orange (Medium) to green (Ultra Soft, finish). The pad colour matches the polish colour. So you combine by system, not by gut feeling.
• Thermo foam against heat build-up. The open-cell core dissipates around 80 percent of friction heat, instead of trapping it in the paint like conventional foam (around 20 percent). That keeps the cut consistent and the pads usable up to 6 times longer than standard foam.
• Sizes from 15 to 165 millimetres. From the Ø 15 mm mini for tight swage lines to the Ø 165 mm panel pad for bonnets, a single system covers every spot on the body. Four shapes, trapezoid, allrounder, mini and cone, plus three materials.

Detailing1's tip from the shop: The most common mistake when choosing a pad is starting with the firmest one to play it safe. That's exactly backwards. Effective cutting power comes from pad times polish, and a pad that's too firm on a thin edge or soft clear coat cuts through faster than you'd like. When people ask us, we almost always advise starting one step milder and only stepping up if the defect demands it. You can always step up, but you can't get burned-through paint back.

Firmness is the key decision with any pad

Before you think about size or shape, decide on firmness. It determines how much cutting power reaches the paint and is the biggest lever in the whole system.

ZviZZer grades its foam pads in five firmness levels with fixed colours: blue is Ultra Hard with the strongest cut, followed by red (Hard), orange (Medium), yellow (Soft) and green (Ultra Soft) as the finest finishing stage. The firmer the foam, the more pressure it passes to the polish and the more aggressively the combination cuts. A soft pad flexes more, gives less cut and works more gently into the finish.

The key idea behind it: the pad doesn't cut by itself. It carries the polish and, through its firmness, controls how much of the abrasive actually works on the paint. The same polish gets noticeably more aggressive on a red pad than on a yellow one. That's why the ZviZZer colour logic works so reliably: stay within one colour and pad and polish are properly matched.

Day to day that means: orange Medium is the versatile starting point for most cars, the pad for light to medium correction and one-step work. Deep scratches call for a firm red or ultra-hard blue pad, that last show-car percent for a soft yellow or green one.

One small caveat: not every shape covers all five grades. Trapezoid, allrounder and mini come in the full range from blue to green. The cone pad only comes in three grades, and the wool, microfibre and velour material pads sit completely outside the colour scale. Trapezoid, allrounder, mini and cone: four shapes for four jobs

Besides firmness, the foam pads differ in shape. Four geometries cover different surfaces and machines, from the large panel pad to the tapered detail cone.

The trapezoid pad is pure open-cell thermo foam with hook-and-loop and a centre hole for cooling. It's light and direct, runs on dual action and rotary, and its trapezoid edge handles contours well.

The allrounder pad also has a layer rubber foam base, meaning a rubber interlayer between hook-and-loop and foam. It stabilises contact, keeps the face flat and makes the pad more forgiving on large panels. Both shapes come in all five grades and in Ø 50, 70, 90, 140 and 165 millimetres.

Mini and cone are the detail pads. The mini pad is flat, comes in a 10-pack in Ø 15 and 25 millimetres and sits on a mini polisher for tight flat spots such as mirror triangles, door handle recesses or sills. The cone pad tapers to Ø 30 by 40 millimetres, and its tip reaches swage lines, air intakes and badge edges that a flat pad can't get to.

The cone pad has two quirks: it's meant for rotary only, because it builds targeted pressure at its small tip, and it only comes in three grades (red, orange, yellow) instead of five. The mini pad, on the other hand, runs on dual action and rotary and is available in all five grades.

So shape follows the job, not taste. Large panels like bonnet or roof go much faster with trapezoid or allrounder from Ø 50 millimetres up. Tight radii you'll only reach with mini or cone. A pad that's too big won't get into the swage line, and a Ø 15 mm mini on the bonnet will cost you the afternoon.

Wool, microfibre and velour extend the foam system

Alongside the five foam grades there are three pads made of other materials on the same thermo foam core. They cover the edges where pure foam reaches its limit.

The wool pads deliver the strongest initial cut. The Nano Wool Pad is pure wool for heavy correction, maximum cut on deep defects. The hybrid pad mixes natural and synthetic wool and, thanks to its lambswool surface, finishes much finer than a pure wool pad, often good enough for one-step. Wool also runs cooler than closed-cell foam and dissipates up to 80 percent of friction heat. Both run on dual action and rotary.

The microfibre pad carries thousands of short fibres on the foam core. They cut faster than a foam pad of the same aggressiveness while leaving a finer finish, which makes it the all-rounder for one-step polishing on hard clear coats. The price: it clogs faster and needs knocking out and washing more often. The velour pad sits at the other end. Its dense, short-pile fabric barely cuts and is the pure finishing stage, ideal for streak-free application of liquid waxes and sealants too.

The rule of thumb across all materials: maximum cut with wool, efficient one-step with microfibre or medium foam, pure finish with velour or soft foam. One material, one job, all with the same hook-and-loop back for common backing plates.

Pad size depends on the panel and the backing plate

Once firmness is settled, pick the size according to the area you're polishing and your backing plate. The two go together, otherwise the pad edge overheats.

The trapezoid and allrounder panel pads come in five diameters from Ø 50 to 165 millimetres, each 20 millimetres thick. The large Ø 140 and 165 millimetres are meant for bonnets, doors and roofs, where you cover a lot of area in a few passes. The small Ø 50, 70 and 90 millimetres fit bumpers, mirrors and tighter radii.

Below that, the detail range begins. The mini pad (Ø 15 and 25 millimetres) and the cone pad (Ø 30 by 40 millimetres) take on the spots a panel pad can't reach. If you polish a whole car yourself, two to three sizes per job are enough without owning every variant.

The crucial practical point is the backing plate. It has to be smaller than the pad diameter, otherwise the plate edge sticks out and rubs directly on the paint, with overheating and edge contact as the result. As a rough rule, the plate sits about 10 to 15 millimetres below the pad size. A Ø 160 mm pad runs on a 150 plate, a Ø 40 mm pad on a 35.

What we keep seeing at Detailing1: lots of people only buy the large pads and then get frustrated at every bumper edge. A sensible basic kit covers at least two sizes, a panel pad of around Ø 130 to 140 millimetres and a small one of around Ø 50 to 70 millimetres. The straightforward default to start with is the Thermo Allrounder Pad Medium in orange, forgiving in firmness and stable on large panels.

A pad is a tool and a wear part at the same time

Even a long-lasting pad is a consumable. Look after the tool and swap it in time, and you'll get its full lifespan and more consistent results.

The open-cell thermo foam core makes ZviZZer pads last up to 6 times longer than standard foam, because it keeps its shape under load and doesn't collapse or burn out prematurely. But you only get that lifespan if the pad stays clean. A pad clogged with polish, wax and paint residue smears, spreads the film unevenly and creates exactly the holograms the polish is supposed to remove. Cleaning while you work, not just at the end, is the key lever.

There's a clear line when it comes to cleaning: knock out polishing dust regularly, wash lukewarm and, above all, air-dry. Thermo foam doesn't like hot drying, and wool and microfibre also need to dry through completely, otherwise the fibre mats or goes mouldy. How to keep foam, wool and microfibre pads clean systematically is shown by the pad cleaner by ZviZZer. A wet pad never goes back on the machine.

Swapping isn't failure, it's routine. At the latest when the foam tears, the hook-and-loop loses its grip or the pad hardens despite cleaning, it's done. Small pads wear faster per area, which is why the mini pad comes in a 10-pack straight away. Running a worn pad on the paint doesn't save money, it costs you polish and working time for a worse result.

One last point on the hook-and-loop: never rip a still-sticky pad dry off the backing plate. The hook-and-loop layer is the weak point, and by force you're more likely to separate the hook-and-loop from the foam than the pad from the plate. Let the pad dry a bit or dampen the hook-and-loop briefly, and it'll come off cleanly. That keeps the more expensive backing plate intact, and only the pad, the wear part, goes eventually.

How to choose the pad for your scenario

The honest answer to the question of the right pad is: it depends on paint condition and location. Three typical cases show the logic.

Deep scratches and heavy weathering: start firm here. A Nano Wool Pad or an ultra-hard blue foam pad gives the necessary initial cut, then you work your way down via Medium until a soft pad closes up the gloss. That's the multi-step route for real correction. Maximum cut comes from the Thermo Nano Wool Pad, but use it deliberately sparingly on a thin edge.

Well-kept daily paint with fine swirls: one step is enough here. A microfibre pad or a medium orange foam pad corrects and finishes to a gloss in one pass, hologram-free. That's the pragmatic default for most cars that just need their depth back. How pad and polish work together as a system is covered across the board in the polishing by ZviZZer range.

Show-car finish on paint that's already good: here it's all about gloss. A soft velour or Ultra Soft pad brings out deep gloss and lays down a sealant streak-free. What we advise from experience: if you're unsure, don't start with the coarsest pad, start in the middle with orange Medium and only step up if the defect won't budge. A single clean one-step pass often gets more out of dull paint than most people expect, and the risk stays manageable.
