What is the A1 "HIGH END" Speed Detailer? A quick detailer from Dr. Wack that takes dust and fingerprints off clean paint and builds its own beading while it's at it. No substitute for a wash, no polish and no sealant that lasts for weeks.

A1 "HIGH END" Speed Detailer is a quick detailer from Dr. Wack for cleaning paint in between washes. The ingredient declaration lists under five per cent aliphatic hydrocarbons, meaning straight-chain solvents without the ring structure that makes plastic swell. They dissolve the greasy film of a fingerprint; the rest of the formula sits as a slip layer between towel and paint. For you that means the towel doesn't drag across the surface, it glides over it.

The difference from a spray wax lies in the balance, not the base formula. A detailer carries more cleaning surfactants, a spray wax more protective ingredients. That's why this product can go on lightly soiled paint, and that's why its beading stays weaker than a spray sealant's. Lightly soiled means dust and fingerprints, not a week of country roads.

• First place for gloss and colour refresh. In 2022 AUTO BILD, together with the testing organisation KÜS, measured twelve detailers; the Speed Detailer came out as test winner with a grade of 1.1. The gloss measurement ran on panels that had been dulled down to 70 gloss units beforehand, and it raised the value more than any other.
• Three out of twelve stayed neutral on plastic. Several detailers in the same test left fine cracks on the polycarbonate strips, the material your headlight lenses are made of. The Speed Detailer was one of the three products that did no harm there. In practice: overspray on trim, mirror caps or headlights has no consequences.
• Dry or damp, same result. On dried paint you work it as a detailer, on still-wet paint as a drying aid. One user put both methods side by side on the same bonnet and found no difference in beading. The 500 ml bottle comes with a trigger sprayer; the 100 ml bottle weighs 132 grams when full.

Detailing1's tip from the shop: We often get questions about fresh swirls that turn up in raking light after a dry detailer session. The formula brings a slip layer, not water: any grit on the paint travels along with the towel. Before you spray, run the back of your hand over the bonnet. If it feels gritty, the car needs the hose. After three dry days parked at the kerb, the detailer is the wrong tool.

Without dwell time, the Speed Detailer softens nothing

Spray, spread, wipe off, all in one go: the manufacturer doesn't grant the Speed Detailer a single second of waiting time.

That's not convenience, it's design. A pre-cleaner gets dwell time because it's meant to break bonds; this detailer has nothing to break. It picks up what's already sitting loose on top and lays its film in the same pass. That's why the product information sheet puts the word clean before the first spray, and that's why you work in sections you can wipe off again in one pass.

The data sheet lists two towels instead of one, and the reason is the cleaning component. The first collects the dust you've just loosened; keep using it and you carry that dust onto the next panel. A deep-pile microfibre towel traps the particles between its fibres, a flat-weave one pushes them along. So the second towel only gets dry work.

The spray head puts out a wide, fine mist that you can set onto the panel or into the towel. If a spot dries on anyway, no harm done: re-spray, spread, wipe off. Sun and warm panels are the enemy, because the water content then flashes off faster than the towel can keep up. When you're done, turn the nozzle back; the stop setting keeps the bottle sealed in the boot.

As a drying aid, the order flips. The detailer goes onto still-wet paint and you take water and product off in the same pass. The towel saturates noticeably faster, so keep a third one handy. If you want to check the beading right away, give the paint the two hours Dr. Wack specifies for the full effect. A shower before then does no damage, but it costs performance.

The beading booster doesn't strengthen anything, it adds its own beading on top

The beading booster doesn't renew a sealant, it lays its own layer over it; once that wears off, whatever was on the paint before takes over again.

The manufacturer gives no durability figure at all, and that's consistent. One user left a treated bonnet half standing for three weeks, including hail and a wash by someone else, and found weaker but still present beading afterwards. A targeted hand wash with shampoo ended it in the same video. His verdict: one to three weeks, depending on conditions.

The testers put the same process into numbers. An untreated panel takes six seconds for the water to run off completely, the best products in the field only 0.6 seconds, measured at a 30-degree incline and 480 litres per minute. After that, panels were hand-washed up to fifteen times and measured again each time. In this method a detailer doesn't get worse, it gets thinner.

The Speed Detailer doesn't clean scratch-free because it's soft, but because there's liquid between towel and paint. Take away that liquid, through too big an area, a saturated towel or paint that's been standing outside for two weeks, and the mechanism is gone. The manufacturer says scratch-free for light soiling. That's not a throwaway line, it's the condition.

Two more limits are set. The approval covers metallic, solid, nano and more scratch-resistant clear coats as well as gloss wraps; matte paints and matte wraps don't appear there, which makes sense for a product that builds gloss. And the cleaning power stops at dust and fingerprints: bug residue, tar and tree sap need a different product.

For everyday use that means a clear division of roles. If the paint is clean and you want to take off dust between two washes, reach for the A1 "HIGH END" Speed Detailer. If the protection needs to last for months, a spray wax with longer durability belongs on the paint, and the detailer becomes the tool for the time in between.

The Speed Detailer is the last step, never the first

Detailers come from professional valeting and show stands: they come out when the car is finished and about to be looked at.

That hits a fairly small group spot on. If your car lives in a garage and you take off the week's dust before a drive, if you still find water spots on the tailgate after the wash, if you want the last fingerprints off the driver's door before photos or a meet: for you, this is exactly the tool. If you want it to replace the wash, you're buying past the problem.

With the bottle size, where you use it decides, not how much. The 500 ml bottle with trigger sprayer sits on the shelf and does the whole car; the 100 ml bottle is just under 15 centimetres tall and weighs 132 grams full, it's the one for the boot. And then there's the line under the test result. That doesn't devalue the readings: KÜS measured alongside, and several products failed on material compatibility.

How to use the A1 "HIGH END" Speed Detailer

Check the paint first, then grab the bottle

The first move doesn't involve the product. Run the back of your hand over a horizontal panel: if it feels smooth, you can get going. If it feels gritty or grabs, there's grit on the paint, and that belongs under running water, not under a towel. The Speed Detailer brings a slip layer, but no rinse water.

Have two microfibre towels ready: the first catches the dirt, the second buffs dry. Shake the bottle, turn the nozzle to spray. Then either mist a small section or put two sprays into the microfibre towel. Both ways are approved; via the towel, less overspray lands on rubber and trim.

Spread and immediately follow with the dry side of the towel. There's no waiting time; the product isn't meant to dry on at all. Keep the sections small enough to wipe off again in one pass, and flip the towel as soon as it starts to drag.

On wet paint it works as a drying aid: drying towel over the panel, spray on, take water and product off in the same pass. The towel saturates faster, so keep the third one within reach. Finally, turn the nozzle back to the stop setting so the bottle stays sealed in transit.

Notes: Neither direct sun nor warm panels get along with the product, because the water content then flashes off faster than the towel can keep up. After application the paint needs two hours without moisture, otherwise the full effect doesn't develop.
