What is the YETI Rambler 4 oz Cup? A stainless steel espresso cup in a two-pack, 118 millilitres, ceramic-coated inside and stackable. It fits under most portafilters and survives life in the boot. There's no lid, not even as an extra.

The YETI Rambler 4 oz Cup is YETI's espresso cup for the part of the day that happens next to the car. Two cups of 118 millilitres each, no handle, no saucer, around 90 grams of stainless steel in your hand. It takes a single shot as easily as a double, nests inside its twin, and sits so firmly on the folding table that nobody has to hold on to it.

• Two cups, one tower in the glovebox. The pair nest inside each other and together take up about the space of one big mug. Around seven centimetres tall, two in the pack, because espresso drunk standing up is rarely drunk alone. One for you, one for whoever wanders over next.
• Fits under almost any portafilter. At just under seven centimetres tall, the cup goes under most machines without you taking out the drip tray or sliding it in at an angle. 118 millilitres swallows a double shot too, without you having to squeeze two cups in side by side.
• Ceramic inside, steel outside. Espresso is acidic, and after a few months bare stainless steel shows it. Here there's a DuraSip ceramic layer on the inside, so the taste stays neutral and the wall doesn't discolour. YETI adds a five-year warranty on defects in materials and workmanship.

Detailing1's tip from the shop: The most common mistake doesn't happen while drinking, it happens ten seconds before. Pull your espresso into a cup that spent the night in the boot and you'll wonder why it's lukewarm by the third sip. One roaster puts the difference between a room-temperature cup and a briefly pre-warmed one at around ten degrees.

So: hot water in, leave it ten seconds, tip it out, only then pull the shot. It's a barista move, costs nothing, and with a 118-millilitre cup it's the only lever you've got. After that you have four minutes in which the espresso tastes the way it should.

Two cups that fit under almost any portafilter

The cup belongs to the morning that starts in your own kitchen at half five and ends in a car park at nine. It gets filled at home and drunk somewhere else.

The machine has been warm for ten minutes, two small cups sit under the portafilter, the double shot runs into both. Then they get rinsed and go in the bag for the folding table. Eighty kilometres later the car is parked in the front row, the tailgate is up, and the same two cups come out of the same bag. No queue at the vending machine, no paper cup that crumples when you press the lid on.

On a road trip in the weekend car, only the source changes. Moka pot on the stove, folding table at the open tailgate, someone in a jumper standing next to it waiting. The cup sits firmly on the table, doesn't wobble, and you hold it on the outside while fresh espresso sits inside. On the painted boot sill, nothing is left after two hours that needs wiping off.

In the paddock it plays the same role. Downtime between two runs, bonnet up, someone talking tyre pressures. Two cups on the toolbox, one of them half full, and nobody keeping an eye on them. Afterwards they get stowed as a tower: nested, they take up the space of one big mug in the glovebox, and they don't rattle in the rucksack.

What stays in your hand is the reason the ritual works. The wall is smooth and only hand-warm on the outside, the cup weighs around 90 grams empty, so it sits heavier than any paper cup and lighter than any porcelain one. You turn it without thinking while you talk, set it down, pick it up again. By the second meet you're doing it without looking.

No lid and no hour of heat retention

If you think of this cup as a small flask, you're buying the wrong thing: it has no lid, there isn't one to buy later, and YETI deliberately gives no hot-holding times here.

This is where the Rambler 4 oz Cup regularly gets criticised, and the criticism is fair. It's an open cup. It belongs on the folding table, the boot sill, the toolbox, but not in a rucksack and not in the cup holder while you're driving. Only the 8 oz tumbler comes with a MagSlider, and the 6 oz Mug can be fitted with the small MagSlider. This one can't.

On heat retention, YETI itself has given the most honest answer: a small cup has less steel and less insulation than the big formats, so thermally it can't keep up. For an espresso drunk in four minutes, that doesn't matter. For a drink that's supposed to sit for an hour, it does. You don't fill it above 85 degrees anyway, and the microwave and freezer are out.

The volume is a decision too. 118 millilitres is espresso, ristretto, macchiato and a Nespresso pod. A cappuccino with foam won't fit, and if you like a thick porcelain rim against your lips, you'll have to get used to the slim steel rim. If you drink while standing, these cups. If you drink while driving, a travel mug with a screw lid that can survive being knocked over.

When it comes to cleaning, things are more relaxed than the ceramic layer might suggest. YETI approves all Rambler for the dishwasher, either rack, and after a few dozen cycles the inside looks the same as before. One retailer still recommends hand washing to go easy on them. If you rinse both straight after drinking anyway, you can skip the question. Bleach and scouring agents stay out either way.

Four ounces without a handle or six with one

The choice is between two formats from the same family and comes down to how you hold the cup and how much goes in. 118 millilitres without a handle is the most compact option.

The Rambler 4 oz Cup is for people who drink espresso and nothing else: no handle, no lid, minimal space needed, two cups for two people. If you sometimes want 177 millilitres, need the handle for hot fingers or want to add a small lid later, the espresso cup with handle in a two-pack is the one for you. Both come as a pair, both handle the dishwasher.

The set isn't meant for filter coffee in the cold, for the drive, or for anyone who wants to keep a drink warm over a longer stretch on the stand. And if you're only after a single cup, you're paying for two here. The rest of the range is in the outdoor and drinkware category.

The colour decides how it ages, visually at least. There are seven finishes to choose from, from Black and Navy to Frosted Sage, Seafoam, Tahini and White. The dark shades are more forgiving of coffee splashes and paddock dust on the folding table, the light ones look better in a photo next to the car but show every fingerprint. Two cups, one colour, two people.

The real point only shows after three seasons. The boot in July, the toolbox in October, the folding table in February, with a few dozen dishwasher cycles in between. What you're holding afterwards may have a dent in the finish, but the colour sits where it sat on day one, the inside looks like new, and neither of them has turned into shards along the way. Porcelain wouldn't have survived that journey.

The one tip no manufacturer puts on the product page: don't nest the two cups while they're damp. Otherwise a film of water stays trapped between the walls and smells musty after two weeks in the cupboard, even though both cups are clean. Let them dry first, then stack. Thirty seconds of patience, and you'll never have that problem.

Is there a lid for the 4 oz cups?

No, and there isn't one to buy later either. This is an open espresso cup for the folding table, not for the drive or the rucksack. If you need a lid, take the 6 oz espresso cup with handle, which takes the small MagSlider lid.

Does the cup fit under my portafilter?

At around 7 centimetres tall, it fits under most portafilters without you having to take out the drip tray. If your spout is narrow, just pull the double shot into one cup. 118 millilitres takes it easily.

How long does the espresso stay warm?

YETI deliberately gives no hot-holding times for this format, small cups can't keep up thermally with the big ones. For an espresso drunk in four minutes, it's enough. The cup can't keep a drink warm for an hour.

Does a cappuccino fit?

No. 118 millilitres is espresso, ristretto and macchiato. For a cappuccino with foam the cup is too small, so take the 296-millilitre Rambler coffee mug with handle instead.

Can the cup go in the dishwasher?

Yes, YETI approves all Rambler. Keep bleach and scouring agents out, and the microwave and freezer too. Let the cups dry before stacking, otherwise a film of water sits between the walls.

Doesn't coffee from stainless steel taste metallic?

Not here. The inside has a DuraSip ceramic layer, so the taste stays neutral and the wall doesn't discolour. Coffee oils don't build up as a film, so the cup from the last meet doesn't still smell of it at the next one.

What colours are there?

Seven: Black, Frosted Sage, Navy, Pampa Light Green, Seafoam, Tahini and White. Both cups in the pack are the same colour. Dark shades are more forgiving of splashes on the folding table, light ones show every fingerprint.

To keep both looking new after three seasons:

1. Rinse with hot water for 10 seconds before pulling a shot and tip the water out.
2. Rinse with warm water straight after drinking, so nothing dries on.
3. Both cups into the dishwasher, either rack.
4. Let them dry completely before nesting them.

No bleach, no scouring agents, no microwave, no freezer. Don't fill with anything hotter than 85 °C.
