The YETI Rambler 6 oz espresso cup is YETI's small mug with a handle for people who drink their espresso outside rather than in the kitchen. 177 millilitres, stainless steel, ceramic-coated inside, always in a pack of two. It sits on the folding table at the open tailgate, in the paddock next to the toolbox, and at six in the morning on the boot sill while the field slowly fills up.

• Two cups take up the space of one. The pair nest inside each other, no lid, no adapter. 9.8 centimetres wide including the handle and 7.7 tall, stacked they both ride in the same corner of the crate where a single cup would otherwise sit. One for you, one for the passenger.

30 seconds of hot water in, tip it out, then pull the shot. That's the difference between hot and properly hot. Second point: stir sugar in with wood or plastic. Metal spoons are the only thing that really wears down the inner coating over time, and YETI says so itself.

The first under the machine and the second at the folding table

The cup fits under most espresso machines, so the espresso runs straight into it and doesn't need decanting into a second vessel before you set off.

Sounds trivial, but it's exactly where most outdoor cups fall down. They're too tall for the portafilter, so the espresso goes into porcelain first and then gets tipped over. On the way it loses half of what you got up at half five for in the first place. Here that step disappears: machine on, cup underneath, there's no lid to put on, so off you go.

At the meet, the handle takes over. Six o'clock in March, still dark, cold fingers wrapped around something that's hand-warm on the outside rather than hot. That's exactly why a handle on 177 millilitres makes sense at all. You don't cradle the cup in your palm, you carry it as you weave between the cars and stop three times.

The second scene is the folding table at the open tailgate. The cup sits firmly on its roughly 6-centimetre base, it doesn't sweat, and when you pick it up after twenty minutes there's dry paint underneath. We had two of them riding along in the car for a whole season, through Sunday meets and long hours on the stand. In all that time, not a single ring was left on the boot sill.

What carries the morning on top of that is the taste. Inside there's no bare steel wall but a fused ceramic layer, which is why the espresso tastes of espresso rather than of the cup. If you've ever ruined a good shot in bare stainless steel, you'll notice the difference at the first sip. The layer doesn't wear away as long as no metal scrapes around in it.

The third scene is the longest. Paddock, midday, the car is on the trailer and nothing happens for an hour. Two cups, one espresso for you, one for whoever just wandered over to ask what's under the bonnet. That's why it's a two-pack: one cup on its own in the car is a one-off, two make a kit.

Without a lid it stays a cup and never becomes a travel mug

The Rambler 6 oz espresso cup is an open drinking vessel, not a transport container. No lid is included, and even with the optional small MagSlider it doesn't become leakproof.

That's the first honest limit and the one that crops up most often in reviews. The matching lid costs extra, and YETI itself says of all MagSlider lids that they aren't leakproof and don't prevent spills. So coffee in the rucksack is out. With its handle the cup won't fit a cup holder anyway, it was never built for that.

The second limit is how long it keeps things warm. For the small formats YETI deliberately gives no number of hours and says openly in its own FAQ that less material also means less insulation. Carry over the 4 to 6 hours from tests of the big Rambler bottles and you'll be disappointed. The right benchmark is porcelain, and in that an espresso is lukewarm after four minutes.

Then the small don'ts: no microwave, YETI warns explicitly against that, and no open flame despite the camp look. And it only comes in pairs. If you need exactly one cup, you still buy two and put the other in the boot, where, to be fair, it rarely stays on its own for long.

That leaves the question of the right size, and this is where most wrong purchases happen. 177 millilitres is a European measure, meant for a cortado or flat white. If you want a straight espresso instead, go one size down. If you see it as a coffee mug for the whole morning, the 295 millilitres of the big Rambler Mug is the right call, and it comes with a lid.

That gives you a simple rule. If you drink while standing and talking, this cup. If you drink while driving, a travel mug with a screw lid that stays shut under braking. The cup doesn't replace it, and it doesn't replace the cup.

After three seasons in the boot it has a dent and a story

The cup is built for people who use their kit instead of wrapping it in cotton wool. It ages visibly, but it doesn't age to death, and YETI gives five years on it.

Three seasons means: the boot in July, the toolbox in October, the boot sill in February, and two hundred dishwasher cycles in between. What you're holding afterwards has a scuff on the base and, where the handle meets the body, the one spot where the colour eventually gives way. That's the most common wear point and the one reviews are quickest to criticise. It comes, and it comes for everyone.

Inside, on the other hand, almost nothing happens. The ceramic layer doesn't take on coffee stains or build up a film, so Sunday's cup doesn't still taste of Sunday on Wednesday. If you've ever drunk from a stainless steel mug that smells of old filter coffee after three weeks, you know what a difference that makes day to day.

Who it isn't for: people who need 400 millilitres of filter coffee in the morning and sip it over two hours. For that the format is too small and too open. 177 millilitres is the cortado, the flat white, the double espresso with a splash of milk. If you prefer a straight espresso without a handle, take the 118-millilitre espresso cups. The rest of the range is in the outdoor and drinkware category.

This is about more than a cup. At these meets, people talk about kit the way they talk about cars, because both tell the same story. If you look after a car instead of using it up, you've no interest in a drinking vessel that gets replaced every season either. A cup on the boot sill gets looked at like the car underneath it, and that's not a claim, it's the reason these cups are there.

There are seven colours in the shop, from Black through Navy and Seafoam to Tahini. In practice that only matters on one point: two cups in the same shade look like a kit on the folding table, two in different shades look like chance. If you want both colour worlds, buy two two-packs and you've got four cups, which is rarely a problem at Sunday meets.

The one tip no manufacturer puts on the product page: don't stack the two cups while they're still damp. Nothing dries between two nested stainless steel walls, and what you open two weeks later smells musty even though both are clean. Let them dry first, then stack. Thirty seconds of thought that decide whether you keep using two cups for good or just one.

Is a lid included?

No. The two cups come without lids. The small MagSlider fits and is sold separately, but it doesn't make the cup leakproof. It isn't meant for carrying in a rucksack or drinking on the move.

Does the cup fit under my espresso machine?

Usually, yes. YETI explicitly designs the 6 oz cup to fit under most espresso machines. At 7.7 centimetres tall it's low enough for portafilter and capsule machines, so you don't have to decant.

What's the difference from the 4 oz espresso cup?

The 4 oz cup holds 118 millilitres and has no handle, it's for a straight espresso. The 6 oz cup holds 177 millilitres, has a handle and also covers a cortado, flat white and double espresso with milk.

To keep it looking new after three seasons:

1. Rinse it with hot water for 30 seconds before pulling a shot and tip the water out.
2. Stir sugar in with wood or plastic, never metal.
3. After the meet, rinse it out or put it in the dishwasher.
4. Let it dry completely before nesting the two cups.
5. Store them stacked and dry, and nothing will smell musty even after two weeks.

No bleach, no scouring agents, no steel wool, never in the microwave.
