The YETI Rambler Bottle with Chug Cap is the bottle for an early start to the weekend. Hot coffee on the drive over, cold water in the afternoon, no wet ring on the folding table. Not made for one-handed sipping while driving, and not for fizzy drinks.

The insulated bottle with Chug Cap is YETI's bottle for people who pour their coffee at home and want to drink it hot two hours later at the meet. Four sizes from 532 millilitres to around 1.9 litres, 72 variants on the shelf, and a lid with a three-finger handle it hangs from while your other hand carries keys, folding chair and phone.

• Half-five coffee is still coffee at eight. An independent comparison test filled the 769-millilitre size at 82 degrees and measured 71 degrees after one hour, 47 after six (Prudent Reviews). For the drive over, that means you're drinking at the meet what you poured at home, not the lukewarm leftovers.
• The table under the bottle stays dry. Two hours of iced water in the August sun, and the surface underneath stayed dry. No ring on the folding table, none on the shelf above the glovebox, none on the leather seat. YETI calls it No Sweat Design, and it's the reason these bottles end up with people who otherwise don't let anything damp near their interior.
• After three seasons in the boot it looks like year one. OutdoorGearLab gives the 769 a 9.0 out of 10 for durability and dropped it during testing: a dent in the base, scratches on the lid, nothing else. YETI gives a five-year warranty on defects in materials and workmanship, and replacement lids and gaskets are sold separately in Europe.

Detailing1's tip from the shop: The mistake that spoils it for new owners happens as soon as they screw it shut. Crank the big ring down hard and you tighten the narrow spout underneath too, and two hours later at the meet you can only get the small cap off with both hands. Remember the order: small cap first, then the big ring. Hand-tight means to the first resistance, not a quarter turn more. Start it on the thread at an angle and you'll warp the plastic thread, and that doesn't spring back on its own.

The ritual before you leave takes under two minutes

Unscrew the lid completely, pour in the coffee, lid back on, done. To drink on the go, you just open the small cap, half a turn, and the narrow spout gives you a sip.

Saturday, ten to six, still dark outside. The machine is running, the car is warming up out front, and the insulated bottle with Chug Cap is standing next to it on the worktop. Two hours of driving ahead, there'd be petrol station coffee on the way, but nobody wants that. So you bring your own, and just before eight at the meet it's still the one from home.

The rest is feel. The lid has two levels: at the bottom the wide ring with the three-finger handle, on top the small cap over the spout. A brief scrape of thread on thread, then it sits loose in your palm. The spout gives you a sip, not a wave, and that's exactly why you can drink standing up without soaking your shirt.

The handle is the underrated bit. From the car to the stand, passed over the paddock fence, back to the folding table: it hangs from three fingers while the rest of your hand is still holding keys and a folding chair. When you fill it, the whole mouth of the bottle is open, so you don't spill anything, and in summer you drop in a handful of ice cubes instead.

One thing stays annoying, and the maker doesn't tell you. The Chug Cap doesn't work in a moving car. Two hands or standing still, otherwise not at all. If you want to drink one-handed on the motorway, grab the insulated bottle with flip spout, which pops open with your thumb but can't take anything hot.

Only the smallest size fits the cup holder

If the bottle needs to stand in the centre console while you drive, only the 532-millilitre size will do. It measures 7.6 centimetres, and anything bigger gets tight in almost every car.

The numbers are quick to tell. Typical cup holders run between 6.4 and 8.9 centimetres, with around eight the most common. The 769 is 8.6 centimetres, the litre bottle 9.5, the big 1.9-litre one 12.2. For these three, YETI itself puts a no in its own size chart. Cup holder means 532 millilitres. Footwell, bag or folding table means as big as the day is long.

The maker draws two limits on top. Hot drinks are approved up to 85 degrees for this lid, and filter coffee often comes out of the machine hotter: two minutes with the lid off is enough. Fizzy drinks don't belong in any Rambler bottle. And empty, the 769 weighs around 620 grams, the big one over a kilo. For a hike this is the wrong bottle, and none of the four sizes fits a bike cage.

One point comes up regularly in user forums: the lid starts to smell after a few weeks. The cause is almost always the same, two gaskets that have never been taken out. There's one above and one below the thread, and both pull off. Compared with a straw lid, the insulated bottle with Chug Cap has the edge here, with far fewer nooks.

On the finish, it's worth being honest. YETI says the baked-on colour won't peel, and that matches what we see on our own bottles. That still doesn't make it scratch-proof, and after a drop onto concrete you can tell. If you want a slim bottle for the holder and can do without the handle, you're better off with the travel bottle for the cup holder.

After three seasons in the boot it looks like day one

You don't buy this bottle for the one hour the coffee stays hot, you buy it for the third summer, when it still looks like it did in the first.

It lives between the jack, the jump leads and the box of cloths. It tips over when you pull away, it rolls against the wheel arch liner, it sits for hours in August in a cabin where nobody wants to put a hand on the dashboard. The stainless steel body takes all that in its stride, and the colour is the last thing to give.

The choice is correspondingly wide. Eighteen colours in the small size, twenty-two in the 769, eleven in the big one, from Stainless through Navy and King Crab to Olive Camo. Anyone who stands the bottle next to a car they picked themselves picks the colour too, which is why you rarely see the same one twice at a meet.

In practice, most people end up buying two. The 532 for the drive over with coffee, because it fits the cup holder, and the litre or the big one for the rest of the day with water, when the sun is beating down on the paint from eleven and nobody can be bothered to walk to the drinks stand anymore.

Who it's for: anyone who spends two hours polishing one wing and then doesn't want a bottle that looks like a building-site find after one winter. Who it isn't for: light packers, cyclists, anyone who drinks while driving. The rest of the range of insulated drinkware follows the same maths: buy once instead of three times.

The tip nobody prints on the packaging: all Rambler bottle lids fit all Rambler bottles. So you buy the size that suits your car and your day, and change the character of the insulated bottle with Chug Cap later via the lid. Chug spout for coffee in winter, straw for water in summer. And if the lid smells after two years, you swap just the lid instead of the whole bottle. That's the maths it wins over three seasons.

Can hot coffee go in with the Chug Cap?

Yes, up to 85 degrees. Filter coffee often comes out of the machine hotter, so leave it open for two minutes. The Straw Cap and the TripleHaul Cap, on the other hand, are only approved up to 49 degrees, so they're no good for coffee.

What's the difference between the Chug Cap and the Flip Chug Cap?

The Chug Cap screws open, needs two hands and can take hot drinks. The Flip Chug Cap flips open one-handed, but is only approved for cold and room-temperature drinks.

Why can't fizzy drinks go in?

Pressure builds up in the sealed bottle. YETI rules out carbonated drinks for all Rambler bottles, as well as storing anything perishable.

Why does the lid smell even after cleaning?

Usually the gaskets have never been taken out. There are two in the lid, above and below the thread, both pull off and belong in the cutlery basket of the dishwasher. Then let everything dry out fully with the lid off.

Is DuraCoat scratch-proof?

No. YETI says the baked-on colour won't peel or crack — but it can definitely be scratched, and after a drop onto concrete you can tell. The warranty covers defects in materials and workmanship, not signs of use.

Are there replacement lids and gaskets?

Yes, YETI sells the Bottle Chug Cap separately in Europe. All Rambler bottle lids fit all Rambler bottles, so you can change the character of the bottle later via the lid.

How long is the warranty?

Five years on defects in materials and workmanship, with normal use and proof of purchase. Normal wear, scratches and punctures aren't covered.

Filling: unscrew the lid completely, and the whole opening is free for ice cubes. Hot drinks up to 85 degrees, so leave freshly brewed coffee open for two minutes. No carbonated drinks, nothing perishable overnight.

Closing: screw the small cap on the spout shut first, then the big ring with the handle, and only hand-tight to the first resistance. Crank the ring down hard and you tighten the spout underneath too, and you'll struggle to get the small cap off later.

Cleaning: take the spout off the handle, then pull off both gaskets above and below the thread. Gaskets in the cutlery basket, cap and handle in the top rack, bottle upside down. No bleach, no scouring agents.

Drying and reassembly: let all parts dry out fully in the open, otherwise the lid will smell after a few weeks. When refitting, the larger lip of the gasket sits over the smaller one.
