What is the YETI Rambler Mug? An insulated stainless steel mug with a handle for coffee outdoors, with a welded handle and a push-on Magslider lid. It keeps drinks warm for one to two hours and leaves no water ring. It isn't leakproof, and it won't fit a cup holder.

The YETI Rambler Mug is YETI's coffee mug with a handle for people who brew their coffee at home and still want to drink it hot on site two hours later. It comes in 295, 414 and 710 millilitres and in fourteen colours. The mug for the time next to the car, not for the drive there.

• Warm enough to drink for one to two hours. That's exactly the stretch between arriving, parking up and your first lap of the car park. A Cars and Coffee morning is over by nine, and until then you're drinking it warm while everyone else is on lukewarm.
• No water ring on the boot sill. Even with iced coffee in August, the outside stays dry. The mug stands on painted metal, on leather or on the folding table for two hours and leaves nothing but a dry surface when you lift it. If you've ever spent a weekend polishing, you know what that's worth.
• Two of the three sizes nest inside each other. With the lids off, the 295 and the 414 nest and take up barely more space in the boot than a single mug. The 710 breaks the pattern; it rides alone, but it's the only one nobody has to top up in the evening.

Detailing1's tip from the shop: The most common mistake happens before the first sip. A mug that spent the night in the boot robs your coffee of its first few minutes. Rinse it with hot water for 30 seconds, tip the water out, then pour. The second point can cost you the lid. Freshly brewed coffee is over 90 degrees, and the Magslider lid is rated to 85. Letting it stand for a minute is enough and costs you nothing.

The drive in the dark and the first hour on site

The YETI Rambler Mug is built for outdoor morning events. Cars and Coffee starts around six, it's over by nine, and in between you're standing outside in the wind.

The alarm goes off at half four because it's eighty kilometres there and the good spots are gone as soon as it's light. Brew, decant, set off. Two hours later the car's in the front row, the tailgate's open, and while everyone else queues at the vending machine, you're holding a mug that's still steaming.

The handle isn't a detail here. A fully welded handle is the difference between a mug you hold and one you clutch. With 90-degree coffee inside, you just hold it normally from the outside, with two fingers, like your cup at home. The Magslider clicks audibly into place when you slide it, and after two weeks that sound is part of your morning.

The folding table at the open tailgate is the second scene. The mug doesn't sweat, not even with iced coffee in August. No wet circle on the painted boot sill, no ring on the leather when you put it on the passenger seat for a second. If you've spent a weekend polishing, you don't put anything on it that leaves rings.

It plays the same role in the paddock. Downtime between two runs, bonnet up, someone talking tyre pressures. The mug sits solidly on the toolbox and waits without going cold in the meantime. At the end of the break you drink it rather than tip it away.

On the road trip in the weekend car, the scene just shifts. Petrol station at seven, thirty kilometres of country road to the first viewpoint. There the mug stands on the bonnet while you photograph the car from the front, and it's still full and still warm when you come back.

If you're handing out coffee on site, put an insulated jug on the table and top up from it. The mug is then the thing you drink from, not the supply. Two of the three sizes nest once the lid is off, so a second mug for your passenger rides along without taking up extra space.

The YETI Rambler Mug is a standing mug, not a driving mug. With the handle and up to 13 centimetres across, none of the three sizes fits a standard centre console.

That's not a weakness, it's the decision that gives the mug its character. Wide opening, proper handle, open drinking rim. A mug you put down and pick up again, that warms your hands in the dark and that stays in your hand while you talk. For the drive there are other shapes.

Splash-resistant means exactly that. You can walk across the car park with it, hold it while you chat and set it down on a sloping boot sill. What you can't do is put it in your rucksack or let it ride a roundabout on the passenger seat. A mug tipped over in the footwell is a trip to the upholstery cleaner, not an anecdote.

The honest limits in one paragraph. The Magslider lid holds back splashes while you walk, but it doesn't seal. YETI deliberately doesn't give heat-retention times in hours for the mugs. Microwave is out, freezer is out, and despite the camp-mug look, it doesn't belong on the gas stove.

Two points worth knowing before you buy. 360 to 600 grams empty is a statement for the biggest size, and if you hike with it instead of parking, you'll feel it on day two. And the drinking rim is bare stainless steel, which is the deciding point for anyone with a nickel allergy. On top of that, the push-on lid sits tight on a full mug and wants to be tilted slightly to come off.

That makes for a clear rule. If the mug stands, at the folding table, on the boot sill, at the pit fence, this is the one. If it rides along and needs to go in the console, go for a travel mug with a screw lid that stays sealed in the footwell too.

Which size rides along and which stays at home

The size decides the occasion, not the quality. All three versions share the body, handle and inner coating and only differ in volume and height.

295 millilitres is a good two classic cups. That's the mug for the drive and the quick stop, compact and stackable. 414 millilitres is the all-rounder YETI itself lists as a Camp Mug, and on a road-trip morning it doubles as a cereal bowl. 710 millilitres is the sit-down mug for the long evening at the track, when nobody's getting up to top up any more.

Who it's not for. If you need six hours of hot coffee because your shift is that long, you're buying the wrong mug. Same if you count every gram on a hike. And if you only drink espresso, two small cups serve you more honestly than 295 millilitres, where a double espresso disappears at the bottom.

The real point only shows after three seasons. Boot in July, toolbox in October, boot sill in February. What you're holding after that is 18/8 stainless steel with scratches and maybe a dent, but the colour is right where it was on day one, and inside it looks brand new. Sunday's mug doesn't taste of Sunday on Wednesday.

The one tip no manufacturer puts on the product page. Plan your sizes by lids, not volume. The 295 and the 710 both take the Magslider in Medium; the 414 needs Large. Combine 295 and 710 and you've got the same spare lid in the cupboard for both. Combine 295 and 414 and you're buying two different ones, and you only notice when one goes missing.

Caring for the YETI Rambler Mug

Before the coffee goes in, rinse the mug with hot water for 30 seconds and tip the water out. Otherwise a mug that spent the night in the boot robs your coffee of its first few minutes.

Let freshly brewed coffee stand for a minute. The Magslider lid is rated to 85 degrees; don't fill it to the brim, and open the lid carefully after sliding it.

After the meet, pull off the magnetic slider and lift the seal out of its groove. Mug and lid go in the dishwasher, the lid in the top rack, magnet and seal in the cutlery basket.

Let everything dry, refit the seal and store the mug without the lid on. If you add a second size, plan it by lids rather than volume, because the 295 and the 710 share the Magslider in Medium. The rest of the range is in the outdoor and drinkware category.

Notes: No bleach, no abrasive cleaners, no metal spoons in the mug. Never in the microwave, not in the freezer and, despite the camp-mug look, not on the gas stove. No carbonated drinks and no storing perishable food. The push-on lid holds back splashes but doesn't seal, so don't put anything full in a bag or the footwell.
