The Yonder Shaker Bottle is YETI's bottle for mixing on the go, with no loose mixing part rattling around the footwell. It mixes powder in seconds and stays sealed when closed. It won't keep anything cold or warm; that's not what it's built for.

The YETI Yonder Shaker Bottle is YETI's shaker bottle for people who mix their drink in the car park, not back in the kitchen. Half five, dew on the windows, forty minutes' drive. Once you're there: water in, powder after, lid shut, a few long shakes from the wrist. Your first sip comes while the person next to you is still cracking open a can.

• Two parts, nothing else. No wire ball rattling around the footwell every time you brake, no strainer clogging up. Bottle and lid are the entire parts list. Nothing to roll under the driver's seat, nothing to vanish down the sink and need reordering one day.
• Measuring marks instead of a measuring jug. Nobody sets out a row of measuring cups on a wobbly folding table. You pour up to the mark, lid on, one hand is enough. The marks are moulded into the wall, not printed on, so after two years in the dishwasher they're just as easy to read.
• Three seasons in the boot, same colour. The colour runs right through the material, so a scratch doesn't reveal anything underneath. In a GearJunkie drop test, a Nalgene bottle broke from 1.37 metres; the Yonder held. YETI gives five years against defects in materials and workmanship from the date of purchase.

Day-to-day from Detailing1: The most common mistake is the order. Powder first, water after, and the dry stuff cakes onto the bottom. From then on you're shaking against a cake. YETI says to do it the other way round: liquid first, then powder. The second mistake is the fill level. About 350 millilitres in the 20 oz bottle, about 590 in the 27 oz. The space above isn't you being stingy, it's how the thing works. Filled to the brim, it's just a cup with a lid.

Cars and Coffee is an early-morning thing. The first cars roll in around six, by nine it's all over, and you've been on your feet for three hours.

In that time, the folding table at the open tailgate is your entire kitchen. No tap, no worktop, often wind. That's exactly what the moulded marks are for: pour to the line, lid shut, shake, while your other hand holds the phone someone's using to show you the engine bay of their car.

The lid is the part you touch most. One press of the thumb and the cap pops open, without the spring-loaded frenzy that has cheap bottles flinging half their contents at you. Testers of the YETI version single out exactly that. Shut means shut: when closed, the bottle is leakproof according to the manufacturer.

In the paddock the same bottle works differently and just as well. Between two sessions you've got twenty minutes, helmet off, gloves on the tyre, and drinking there isn't about enjoyment, it's planning. A bottle you can open one-handed and that doesn't run down your race suit is worth more in that quarter of an hour than any material spec.

On a road trip in the weekend car, its role shifts again. Petrol-station coffee in the morning, hairpins at lunchtime, and in the evening the Yonder Shaker Bottle stands next to the camping chair or on a hotel windowsill. It moves from the footwell to the door pocket and back without you giving it a thought. That's the difference between kit and something you have to unpack first.

And it's on the drive there in the dark that the difference from a ball shaker shows most clearly. The powder sits dry in the bottle, the water stands next to it in the footwell, and mixing only happens once you're there. Forty minutes of country road, and not one corner where something clatters against the wall. If you've ever fished a wire ball out from between the seat runners, you know what that's worth.

It doesn't keep things cold, and that's the most common wrong buy

In most people's heads, the name YETI means keeping things cold. This bottle is single-wall plastic; it keeps nothing cold or warm, it mixes. That's the whole job.

What that means in real life: on a warm morning, the outside wall gets wet. Leave it standing for two hours on a painted folding tabletop, the boot lip or a leather seat, and it leaves a ring behind. If you want your drink cold all morning, this is the wrong product, and you'd be right to be annoyed.

On top of that come the manufacturer's hard no-gos. YETI rules out hot drinks for the Yonder line, fizzy drinks too, and it isn't meant for storing food. The shaker lid fits no other bottle, neither the other Yonder water bottles nor a stainless steel Rambler. There's no replacement lid so far.

Two more limits you won't find in any manufacturer copy: with high-fibre meal-replacement powders you may still get a few lumps, which reviewers already reported on the Helimix predecessor. And the angular, ribbed wall is a matter of taste. One tester reports that their husband, who has big hands, found smooth-walled bottles much more comfortable.

That leaves the size question, and the car settles it. The 20 oz bottle, 591 millilitres, is 17.8 centimetres tall and fits beside the seat and in most rucksack side pockets. The 27 oz, 798 millilitres, is the one for long days: two servings, or a thinner mix, without topping up in between. It's 23.4 centimetres tall and wants a spot where it can stay put.

On cup holders, a straight answer rather than a promise. At their widest, both sizes measure about 10.7 centimetres, while typical car cup holders take 7 to 9.5. The base is slimmer than the middle, which is why it still works in plenty of cars. Measure your holder before you order instead of trusting a blanket promise.

For the early riser with a tub of powder in the boot

This bottle is for whoever sets off early and mixes their drink on the way. Not for whoever mostly drinks coffee at the meet and wants it hot.

If your drink needs to stay cold for hours, take a stainless steel insulated bottle. If you want to mix on the go without losing a small part, the Yonder Shaker Bottle is the right tool. It wants this one job, and it does it with no wear parts, no strainer and no reordering.

Who it's not for is quickly said. If you only take water in the morning, you don't need a shaker; a plain water bottle will do. If you're standing trackside in winter and want something warm in your hand, you're barking up the wrong tree entirely. And if you always mix your drink at home and take it ready-made, you're paying for a feature you'll never use.

How it ages is the real reason it works in this scene. A bottle that lives in the boot doesn't get pampered. It gets chucked next to the toolbox, sits behind the rear window for hours in summer and hits the tarmac when you climb out. Because the colour runs right through the material, a scratch doesn't reveal anything underneath. After two seasons you can tell where it's been, but nothing flakes off.

According to the manufacturer, the bottle body is 75 per cent recycled plastic; the shaker lid isn't included in that. That's not a save-the-world pitch, it's a hint at the thinking behind this product. Kit that stays, rather than accessories you replace. The same attitude that drives you with the car anyway, just a notch more mundane.

The trick no manufacturer writes down takes ten seconds and decides whether you'll still like the bottle in two years: rinse it with clean water straight after the last sip, lid off, leave it to dry upside down. Dried-on protein residue is where the smell comes from, and the spot where moisture lingers is the sealing ring in the lid. Stick to that and you'll never need the overnight bicarb treatment.

Does a shaker without a mixer ball really work?

No. The shaker lid fits neither the other Yonder water bottles nor a stainless steel Rambler, and the other way round, the Chug Cap, straw lid and MagSlider don't fit the shaker. There's no separately sold replacement lid for the shaker so far.

Using the YETI Yonder Shaker Bottle

Liquid first, then the powder

Pour in the water or milk first, then add the powder. The other way round, the dry stuff cakes onto the bottom and won't mix in cleanly any more.

Don't fill it to the brim. YETI gives about 350 millilitres for the 20 oz bottle and about 590 millilitres for the 27 oz. The space above is part of how it works, not you being stingy. The moulded marks on the body stand in for a measuring jug.

Close the lid, shake lengthways for five to ten seconds, done. There's no strainer and no mixer ball to fish out afterwards.

Rinse with clean water right after drinking, take the lid off and leave it to dry upside down. That's the whole trick against smells. A normal bottle brush is enough for the corners of the body.

Good to know: Dishwasher-safe, but on the top rack and on the standard programme rather than intensive. Constant exposure to more than 90 °C ages the plastic faster. The lid goes into the machine separately, taken off the bottle, or residue stays on the silicone ring. No hot drinks, no fizzy drinks, no storing food in the bottle. If the protein smell has already set in, a bicarb paste left overnight with the lid off does the job. Always store it open and dry, never closed with moisture left in the lid.
