The YETI Yonder with Tether cap is the lightweight plastic bottle for water on the go. 230 grams empty, and the cap hangs off the bottle while you drink instead of landing in the gravel. It keeps nothing cold and nothing hot, and fizzy drinks don't belong in it.

The YETI Yonder water bottle with Tether cap is YETI's uninsulated water bottle for people who head out early, spend half the day standing around on a car park and don't want to go looking for their cap. Twist off the top, drink, twist it back on. The tether keeps the top firmly attached to the bottle. To refill, the lower part comes off and you've got a wide opening.

• The cap stays on. It hangs off a sturdy tether; you just twist off the top and drink one-handed. Two moves, no loose part rolling between tyre and kerb. If you've ever spent five minutes with a torch under a stranger's car, you'll get the point straight away.
• It fits the cup holder, the 750 at least. At its widest it measures about 7.9 centimetres, and typical car holders take 7 to 9.5. At 8.6 centimetres, the 1-litre size no longer fits in many vehicles. The base is slimmer than the middle, so it slides in rather than jamming.
• 230 grams instead of 600. Empty, it weighs a good third of what a stainless steel bottle of the same size puts on the scales. In a rucksack next to the camera and jacket, you'll feel that after two hours trackside. YETI itself quotes 50 per cent less weight than the Rambler bottles.

Detailing1's tip from the shop: Most people unscrew the wrong part to refill. Up top, only the narrow spout comes off, and neither an ice cube nor a bottle brush fits through it. For ice and cleaning, the lower part comes off. Hold the bottle by its middle at the tap: the unscrewed top hangs on its tether and pulls to one side, and a half-full bottle will otherwise tip over in the sink. Saves you half a minute of mopping up every time.

Cars and Coffee at six and the bottle in the cup holder

The Yonder rides along in the cup holder, gets drunk from at the open tailgate and then stands on the folding table without rolling away. That's the whole job, and it's enough.

The ritual starts the evening before. Fill the bottle, into the fridge, out in the morning and into the holder. On the drive in the dark you barely notice it, and in the footwell one thing stands out that isn't on any spec sheet: the bottle has a flattened side. It doesn't roll from left to right on every bend.

On site, the same flat side takes on a second job. On a bonnet, a sloping tailgate or a wobbly folding table, the bottle stays put instead of wandering off. If you've ever lunged after a bottle making its way across a freshly polished bonnet, you'll know what that's worth.

The spout is narrow, so you drink in a controlled way standing up, one-handed, while the other hand holds the phone with the engine bay photo someone's just showing you. It works the same in the paddock. Helmet off, gloves on the tyre, twenty minutes to the next session, and drinking there isn't about enjoyment, it's about planning.

To refill, you twist off the lower part. That leaves a wide opening that takes ice cubes and a bottle brush. That's why this bottle doesn't smell after a summer in the car. You can reach everywhere.

Go for Clear and you can see from the outside how much is left, so there's no need to shake it at midday. And if the narrow spout ever gets too slow for you, just put a different Yonder cap on. All the accessory caps in this line are interchangeable, but they won't fit a stainless steel Rambler bottle.

It doesn't insulate and that's the whole deal

The YETI Yonder water bottle doesn't insulate. Cold turns warm, hot drinks don't belong in it, and YETI explicitly rules out carbonation for this line, as well as storing food in it.

On a warm morning the outside wall gets damp and leaves a ring on a painted table top or a leather console. A cloth or a coaster belongs underneath. If your drink needs to stay cold for hours, this is the wrong product; take the stainless steel insulated bottle. If it needs to be light and tough, take this one.

On sealing, we stay cautious. YETI calls the Tether cap leakproof when closed; that's the manufacturer's claim. In US customer reviews, though, there are the odd reports of a dripping spout after a few weeks. So we'd carry it upright in the rucksack rather than laying it across the camera bag.

The cap itself feels lighter than a Rambler cup's, and screw caps are simply slower than a flip lid. If you want to drink with gloves on in the paddock, you'll notice. The material info is honest too: according to the manufacturer, the bottle body is made from 50 per cent recycled plastic, with the cap explicitly excluded from that figure.

And the Tether cap has two threads plus a tether, so more edges to dry than a plain screw cap. Before you buy, grab a tape measure and measure your cup holder. The 750, at 25.1 centimetres high, fits almost everywhere; the litre, at 26.9 centimetres high and 8.6 wide, is the more common wrong purchase.

Made for the boot and not for the desk

This bottle is for people whose car is a hobby and whose kit has to ride along without anyone babying it or unpacking it in the evening.

Because a bottle like this doesn't get looked after. It lies next to the toolbox, stands behind the rear window for hours in July, drops onto tarmac as you get out and slides against the jack. The colour is in the material, not on it. A scratch doesn't reveal anything different underneath, because it's the same stuff all the way through.

The drop test gets specific. GearJunkie dropped it against a Nalgene: at about 1.37 metres the Nalgene's base cracked, while the Yonder kept going until the tester ran out of drop height. Advnture threw it onto rock, with no dents and no cracks. A long-term test over several months reports scratches and scuffs, nothing else. YETI gives five years against defects in materials and workmanship.

Who it's not for: anyone taking coffee along in the morning who wants to drink it hot at ten. Nor anyone mixing powder on the go; for that there's the shaker bottle from the same line. And not anyone who drinks sparkling water.

And then there's the thing that's hard to measure. In this scene, kit is part of your identity. If you keep your boot tidy, sort your microfibre cloths by colour and put your weekend car on stands for the winter, you've got an attitude towards things that last. A bottle that looks like day one after three seasons fits right in. A deposit bottle in the cup holder doesn't.

The 750 is the car size for a morning on site, the litre the one for whole days at the track when you don't want to refill three times. The trick no manufacturer writes down costs you two minutes once a month and decides whether you'll still like the bottle in two years. Take the sealing ring out of the cap, rinse both sides, let them dry separately, put it back in. That's the only spot where moisture lingers, and so the only one that eventually turns musty. Stick with it, and after three seasons you've got a bottle that smells of nothing.

Two threads, two jobs

To refill, add ice cubes or wash it out, the lower part comes off. That frees up the whole opening, and a bottle brush fits through it too. Hold the bottle by its middle at the tap, or the unscrewed top will pull it to one side when it's half full.

After use, rinse with clean water and let it air-dry upside down with the cap off; don't put it away closed. Once a month, take the sealing ring out of the cap, rinse both sides and let them dry separately before putting the ring back. That's two minutes, and it's the only spot where moisture lingers.

For a deep clean, everything can go in the dishwasher: bottle upside down, cap in the top rack, sealing ring in the cutlery basket. Hand washing is explicitly fine too.

Notes: No hot drinks, no carbonated drinks and no food storage; YETI explicitly rules these out for the Yonder line. No abrasive cleaners and no chlorine bleach, as they dull the through-coloured surface. The bottle doesn't insulate; on warm days the outside wall gets damp, so put a coaster under it on leather or painted wood. Closed, it's leakproof according to the manufacturer, but we'd still rather carry it upright. Store it open and dry, not with the cap screwed on in the cupboard.
