Iced water for the whole show day and the jug hangs on the fence

The Silo Jug is YETI's plastic water jug for a whole day outdoors next to the car. It hangs from a hook instead of sitting in the gravel. Coffee doesn't go in it, nor does anything fizzy, and it certainly won't fit a cup holder.

The YETI Silo Jug is YETI's water jug for people who fill it with ice and water in the morning and still want cold water by the car in the late afternoon. 1.2 or 1.9 litres, plastic instead of stainless steel, a carry handle with built-in hooks, three colours. It stands by the folding table, hangs off the open tailgate or the paddock fence, and all day long you only touch it to drink.

• It hangs instead of standing. The carry handle has two hooks built in. With them, the big jug and its roughly 2.9 kilograms of filled weight hangs from chain-link fencing, gazebo poles or the raised tailgate. The one place it won't end up is the ground.
• Almost a kilo less on the walk to your spot. Empty, the 1.9-litre jug weighs 1.02 kilograms. The stainless steel jug of the same size puts almost 1.7 kilograms on the scales before there's any water in it. YETI puts the difference at about 40 per cent, and you'll feel it over the last two hundred metres.
• Two lids, both sizes. The straw lid with magnetic slider and the Chug lid with its magnetically docking cap fit both the 1.2-litre and the 1.9-litre jug. Both are leakproof when closed. Buy the second one once, and from then on you choose per day instead of once at checkout.

Detailing1's tip from the shop: The straw isn't the same length in the two sizes. In the 1.9-litre jug it stays as it is. For the 1.2-litre jug it has to be cut down to 19.3 centimetres. Buy a straw lid separately and fit it uncut, and the straw kinks at the bottom and you suck air instead of water on the first pull.

Second trick from the same corner: every part can go in the dishwasher, but take the lid apart first. Pull off the straw, lift the seal out of the groove, release the slider. Assembled, a film of water sits in every joint, and it starts to smell after the third week in a warm boot. Let everything air-dry and only put it back together once it's properly dry.

The Silo Jug hangs on the fence instead of sitting in the gravel

You fill the YETI Silo Jug once with ice and water in the morning, and for the rest of the day it hangs by its handle above the boot sill instead of standing around between the tyres and the gravel.

The routine is short, which is why it sticks. Ice cubes in the freezer in the evening, fill the jug to just below the rim in the morning, lid on, into the footwell behind the passenger seat. Two standard bottles of water plus ice go into the big jug, and after that you don't touch it again until you arrive.

On arrival you don't put it down, you hang it up. The two hooks in the handle grab anything with an edge: chain-link at the paddock, the gazebo frame, the raised tailgate. Sounds like a small thing until you've experienced the alternative, namely a jug standing on dusty ground whose lid you have to wipe before every sip.

You drink straight from the jug rather than pouring. With the straw lid, slide the magnetic slider open, flip up the straw and drink; with the Chug lid, twist off the cap and it clings magnetically to the jug instead of landing in your free hand or in the dirt. For a round at the folding table, four stackable insulated cups stand next to it, taking up the space of one in the boot.

What counts on a hot show day is the surface under the jug. On this model the insulation extends into the lid, and you can see the result at the folding table: after two hours in the sun, the outside wall is dry and so is the boot sill underneath. No water ring, no towel hanging over the tailgate half the day.

Here in Nordhorn, exactly this combination stands in front of the showroom on meet Saturdays. The jug hangs on the fence, the cups stand beside it, and nobody has to nip off to fetch water in between.

Coffee goes in the stainless jug, not in the Silo

The Silo Jug is strictly a cold jug. YETI rules out hot drinks, carbonation, milk and storing food, and neither size fits a cup holder.

The most common wrong purchase comes down to the name. For many people YETI means double-wall stainless steel, and that's exactly what the Silo isn't: it's built from impact-resistant plastic, the same material as the Roadie cool box. That makes it light and practically indestructible, but it costs cooling performance. Ice lasts a show day in the Silo; in the stainless steel jug it lasts longer. If you don't know that, you'll be disappointed when you unpack it.

That makes for a simple decision. If you're carrying water and the jug is going to be carried, hung up and, at some point, dropped all day, go for the Silo Jug. If coffee goes in in the morning or the ice has to last overnight, go for the stainless steel insulated jug, which can be filled hot up to 85 degrees. Both options sit side by side among the insulated jugs in our range.

The second limit is geometry. 14.5 centimetres across for the small jug and 15.4 for the big one, plus 34 and 37 centimetres in height respectively: that's not cup-holder territory, and YETI says so in its own product FAQ. The Silo is a jug for standing and hanging, not for driving. For the drive itself, stick with a bottle next to the gear lever.

For the show day in the paddock, not for the drive

The Silo Jug pays off for people who drive somewhere and then stand next to the car for hours. If you commute and need something to drink in the cup holder, you're buying the wrong thing.

We're talking Cars and Coffee at dawn, the drive to the meet, downtime in the paddock, the road trip in the weekend car. In other words, anywhere the car is parked and the day gets long. Not the commute to the office, the bike rack or the rucksack: it's 1.02 kilograms empty, and full you don't take it for a stroll, you carry it from A to B.

It ages visibly, but not quickly. Plastic picks up scratches where stainless steel gets dents, and white shows paddock dust more than Black or Navy. On the other hand, the colour stays where it was on day one, because it isn't painted on, it's the material itself. YETI gives a five-year warranty against defects in materials and workmanship, on both jug and lid. What that doesn't cover is a straw someone fitted uncut and then kinked.

The YETI Silo Jug isn't meant for someone who just wants a drink on the go. If a bottle has to fit the cup holder, any insulated bottle is the more honest product and takes up less space in the car. The Silo only earns its keep over the hours you're standing outside anyway.

And the point no manufacturer writes down has nothing to do with drinking. A full 1.9-litre jug is almost three kilograms, and for most people it ends up on the boot sill or the wing at some point, because both hands are busy elsewhere.

That's exactly where the fine scratches start, the ones you see in the sun later and can't pin on any particular moment. On the black rear of an estate, a single afternoon with dust between the jug's base and the paint is enough. So the hook in the handle isn't just convenient, it's the reason the thing never gets put down on paint again.

Drinking: with the straw lid, slide the magnetic slider open, flip up the straw and slide it shut again after drinking. With the Chug lid, twist off the cap and it docks magnetically on the jug. Both are only leakproof when closed.
