What is the YETI Cocktail Shaker? A 591-millilitre stainless steel shaker with a strainer in the press-fit lid and a twist cap that doubles as a 30-millilitre jigger. Hot drinks and anything fizzy stay out, and you don't drink from it, you drink from the cups next to it.

The YETI Cocktail Shaker is YETI's shaker for the evening by the car, when the engines are off and someone declares the open tailgate the bar. 591 millilitres, strainer in the lid, cap as a jigger. You fill it, shake for twenty seconds and pour into the cups lined up on the folding table. Then it just stands there without leaving a ring.

• The lid is the jigger. The twist cap on top holds 30 millilitres. Two capfuls make a proper gin, three a generous rum. You don't need a measuring cup or scales in the boot, and in the half-light you count capfuls instead of squinting at lines on a plastic cup. The measure always sits right on top and can't vanish in a bag.
• Twenty seconds of shaking without numb fingers. The outside stays dry and grippy while everything inside drops to drinking temperature. No water ring on the folding table, no puddle on the boot sill, no frosty grip that makes you give up after ten seconds and pour a lukewarm drink. Whatever's left stays cold until the next round.
• One size, five colourways. With ice, 591 millilitres is exactly one big drink or two small ones. 490 grams empty, 23 centimetres high, just under 9 across. It stands upright in any cool box and doesn't topple when you pull away. So the buying decision is purely a choice of colour.

Detailing1's tip from the shop: The most common mistake happens before the first shake. Put the press-fit lid on with the 30 ml cap screwed down tight and you trap air in the lid with nowhere to go. The lid only looks flush, and on the third shake it pops off. The order is the other way round: loosen the cap or take it off completely, press the lid on until it seats, and only then screw the cap down.

The second mistake costs more than a drink. The shaker is leak-resistant, not leakproof. Hold lid and tin together while you shake, like with any shaker, and keep anything fizzy out. YETI explicitly rules it out, because pressure builds up in the closed tin and the lid pops off. Hot drinks are banned for the same reason. Almost every review claiming the lid won't stay on is really describing one of these two cases.

Filled at the tailgate not in the kitchen

You fill the YETI Cocktail Shaker at the open tailgate, shake it for twenty seconds and pour through the strainer in the lid into the cups waiting on the table. One tool, three moves.

The order is always the same. Ice to just under halfway, spirit measured with the cap, juice or syrup on top. Then lid on, cap closed, shake. After twenty seconds it sounds different inside because the ice has got smaller. That's your cue, not the watch on your wrist.

You pour through the strainer without needing a second hand for a bar strainer. Whatever's left stays in the shaker until someone wants a refill. That's exactly what the design is for, and exactly why it makes more sense in the paddock than a three-piece bar set you first have to dig out of your rucksack.

The scene for it isn't Cars and Coffee in the morning. It's the evening after: the last run's done, the cover's over the bonnet, two chairs stand at the boot sill. You pour into whatever's there. The 591 ml insulated tumbler is the obvious candidate, because the same lid fits it too.

What you need to think about beforehand is the ice. The shaker doesn't bring any, and a handful of cubes from the cool box quickly turns to water when you shake it if they're already half melted. Two big cubes beat six small ones because they break down more slowly. Leave without ice and you've got a very expensive cup with you.

A detail no brochure mentions: the base is flat and the body straight, so it stands on a chequer-plate boot floor without wobbling. On the open tailgate of an estate that's the difference between a drink and a stain on the bumper. As long as you don't stand it on the seal.

It shakes cocktails. Not fizz and not hot drinks.

YETI's Cocktail Shaker is built for cold drinks only, because hot drinks and anything carbonated build up pressure in the closed tin and force the lid out.

Ignore that once and you'll find out straight away. A long drink with tonic, shaken hard, ends with the lid on the gravel and half the contents down your trouser leg. That's not a material defect; it's right there in the manufacturer's instructions. The fizz only goes in the glass once the shaken part is already in there.

What it does well is the shaken classic: sour, margarita, daiquiri, anything with juice or syrup. In a comparison test, the margarita came out of the YETI at about 1.7 degrees, out of a tin shaker at about 2.8. The pour volume was identical, so the dilution was the same. The difference is in the drinking temperature and in your fingers.

Two limits still belong on the table. First, the strainer holes are coarse. Small ice shards end up in the glass, which nobody minds on site but a serious bar would. Second, 591 millilitres is gross, so that's counting the ice. One batch makes one big drink or two small ones; for four people you shake twice.

That settles the buying decision. If you work at a fixed bar at home and want a crystal-clear pour, go for a two-piece Boston shaker with a separate strainer. If your bar is the tailgate and one piece has to do the lot, this is the right one. There's no size question; it only comes in 591 millilitres.

For whoever stays on after the last car leaves

The YETI Cocktail Shaker pays off for people who hang around for another two hours after the last car has gone and want to pour something better than lukewarm cans from a paper bag.

It's not meant for whoever's still driving. The shaker belongs at the end of the day, not in the middle of it. Nor is it meant for the barbecue in your own garden with a fixed bar and an ice maker three steps away. There any open mixing glass wins, because the sink is close and nobody has to hold a lid on.

How it ages depends on the colour. The four powder-coated colourways, White, Navy, Tahini and Frosted Sage, pick up scratches over the years and eventually a dent from the folding table, but they keep their shade. Bare Stainless shows every fingerprint and turns matt and dull over the seasons. That bothers some people and is exactly what wins others over.

The rest is maintenance that isn't really maintenance. All three parts can go in the dishwasher, tin in the bottom rack, lid and cap in the top rack. Then let them air-dry, or the cap will smell of the last lime juice next time. YETI gives a five-year warranty on Rambler drinkware, whatever the colour.

The trick YETI never puts in bold: the lid isn't an accessory for this shaker, it's a component in its own right. It fits the 591 ml tumbler, the stackable 473 ml pint and the small lowball just as well. If you've already got two of those in the car, strictly speaking all you need is the shaker lid on its own, and you save yourself one item in the boot.

The complete shaker makes sense if you want the straight, slim body that shakes cleanly instead of a wide tumbler with a lid on top. Both sit side by side in our YETI range, and the honest answer simply depends on what's already in your boot.

Caring for the YETI Cocktail Shaker

Before shaking, loosen or remove the small twist cap, then press the lid on flush and only then screw the cap down. While shaking, hold lid and tin together with both hands.

Rinse it straight after pouring, or fruit acid and syrup will dry hard in the thread. All three parts can go in the dishwasher: tin in the bottom rack, lid and twist cap in the top rack. Then let them air-dry, or the cap will smell of the last lime juice next time.
