Coffee that survives the drive there and the three hours after

The YETI Rambler Tumbler is the open insulated tumbler with a push-on MagSlider lid, built for long stretches standing next to the car. It keeps coffee hot and iced water cold without leaving a water ring. It isn't leakproof and it's not made for lying flat in a rucksack.

The YETI Rambler Tumbler is YETI's insulated tumbler for people who brew their coffee at home at half five and still want to drink it hot in a car park three hours later. Ten to six, nine degrees, sidelights on, and there are already eight other cars on the lot. The tumbler sits in the console. By nine it's all over again.

• Three hours of standing around is business as usual for it. Cars & Coffee runs from six to nine. Pour at half five and at half eight you reach for a cup that's still hot enough to make you sip carefully. In a test series by Prudent Reviews, hot water was still at 46.7 degrees after six hours.
• No water ring on the folding table. Our cold drinks rarely stand on a kitchen table; they stand on painted metal, on leather or on a folding table top. After two hours of July sun you lift the tumbler and it's dry underneath. Taste of Home measured iced water at around 4 degrees after four hours in the sun.
• The small size rides along, the big one stays put. 591 millilitres, about 17.5 centimetres tall, fits most cup holders. The 887 ml size stands almost two centimetres higher and jams in the deep, narrow holders of older European cars. If you're not sure, measure once before you order.

Detailing1's tip from the shop: The most common mistake is only ever putting the lid in the dishwasher. Under the slider there's a rubber seal in a groove, and the spray jet doesn't reach it. After a few weeks you'll taste it in your coffee. Once a week, pull off the slider, take the seal out of the groove, brush both out and wipe the groove. It takes a minute. And take the magnet out before the wash cycle, or you'll be fishing for it in the cutlery basket afterwards.

Forty seconds before you leave decide the third hour

Hot tap water into the tumbler, let it stand for forty seconds, tip it out, then the coffee. Fill it cold and you throw away the first half hour, and you'll notice later in the car park.

Then the lid. It pushes on rather than screwing on, and the slider moves over the drinking opening with a short, solid clack. It's one of those moves you make in the dark without looking after two weeks. Tumbler in the console, door shut, off you go.

On the drive it stays where it belongs. The base tapers, nothing rattles around in the holder, and because the lid only pushes on, you can reach the slider one-handed on the move. No thread to hunt for in the dark.

One more thing before you pour. Freshly brewed coffee is over 90 degrees, and YETI rates the MagSlider lid up to 85 degrees. Letting it stand for a minute costs you nothing. With the straw lid the limit is much lower, at 49 degrees. That one's meant for iced coffee, not hot.

The payoff comes at half eight. You're standing by the third car from the right, reach for the tumbler, and the coffee is still hot. In the Prudent Reviews test series, hot water was at 46.7 degrees after six hours. Three hours in a car park isn't a challenge for the YETI Rambler Tumbler, it's business as usual.

The same routine works on a Saturday in the paddock, when there are two hours of downtime between two runs and nobody fancies walking to the food van. And it works on the road trip in the weekend car, when you leave at five because the road is yours until eight and not after.

The MagSlider keeps splashes in and doesn't seal

The slider is a splash guard, not a seal. Upright in the cup holder and on the table, it's all good; lying down in a rucksack, the tumbler leaks.

What it does do, you'll notice in July. Tailgate open, folding table out, two tumblers of iced water, the car's been standing in the sun for two hours. You lift them up and the table top underneath is dry. No ring, no wiping, no damp towel lying around somewhere afterwards.

On sealing, YETI itself is clearer than any product description. Its own Rambler FAQ says leak-resistant but not one hundred per cent leakproof, and the European product pages list splash protection as the feature. If it really has to be sealed, take the insulated bottle with a screw cap.

The if-then rule is simple. If the tumbler stands open in the holder or on the folding table, the Tumbler is right. If it lies in a bag, moves around between tools or could tip over in the footwell, it's the bottle with the screw cap. In between, it comes down to whether you want to open the lid one-handed while driving.

Two things are strictly off-limits. No freezer, the manufacturer explicitly advises against it. Never the microwave; that's listed as a ban with a fire warning in the documentation. Then the everyday stuff: fizzy drinks don't stay fizzy for long in an open tumbler, and the YETI Rambler Tumbler has no handle for carrying.

The buying decision comes down to the cup holder, not your thirst. The base measures about 7 centimetres on both sizes, but two fingers higher up it's already 8.3. So what matters isn't the depth of the holder but its rim. If the tumbler rides along, the 591 is the safe bet.

If, on the other hand, it stands around, at the track, by the campfire, on the folding table, take the 887 and top up less often. And if you want a handle to carry it by, it's the wrong tumbler anyway; then the model with a handle is the way to go.

After three seasons in the boot it looks like day one

The reason a YETI stands in this scene rather than any old cup only shows after three summers of boot, sun and toolbox.

Scratches, yes; a few dents, yes; fading performance, no. YETI gives five years against defects in materials and workmanship. For the powder coat on the coloured versions, the manufacturer promises it won't chip or crack. What it doesn't promise: that the colour will look exactly the same after years in the dishwasher.

Fading is explicitly not covered, and if you run it through with harsh dishwasher tablets every week, you'll see it in a duller sheen after a while. If you want the colour to stay rich for a long time, wash by hand or go straight for the uncoated stainless steel version. It's also the only one permanently available in both sizes.

The thing is built for anyone who stands in a car park at six in the morning more than three times a year. The folding table, the blanket in the boot, the cloth that's only for glass, the tumbler. None of it is essential, and yet at some point everyone ends up with all of it.

Who it's not for: at your desk any mug will do, and if you carry your cup to work in a rucksack, you need something sealed. On pure insulation performance there isn't a big gap either; Stanley is practically neck and neck in the same test series. The difference is spare parts, warranty and how it looks after years.

In the end, the most expensive mistake with this tumbler isn't the dent from the concrete floor. It's the slider that vanishes in the cutlery basket, without which the whole lid is useless. Make a note when you buy whether you need Medium or Large, so the replacement lid lands in your basket in the right size later, not the wrong one.

Caring for the YETI Rambler Tumbler

Before filling, rinse for forty seconds with hot or ice-cold water so the tumbler doesn't start at room temperature. With the MagSlider lid, fill up to 85 degrees; with a straw lid, only up to 49 degrees. Always carry it upright.

Tumbler and lid can go in the dishwasher; take the magnet off first. If you want the colour on the coated versions to stay rich for a long time, wash by hand rather than using harsh dishwasher tablets every week.

Once a week, pull off the slider, take the seal out of the groove, brush both out and wipe the groove. It takes a minute. The dishwasher doesn't reach there.
