A lost lid doesn't cost you the whole tumbler

The YETI MagSlider replacement lid is the push-on lid with a magnetic slider for the open Rambler tumblers, sold separately in three sizes. It stops splashes while the tumbler stands upright. It isn't leakproof, and it won't fit bottles or Travel Mugs with a screw closure.

The YETI MagSlider replacement lid is YETI's spare lid for all open Rambler tumblers, mugs and lowballs. It's made for the moment you unpack your bag in the evening and the lid isn't in there any more. Somewhere in the car park, between the folding table and the edge of the boot. The tumbler itself is fine, spotless, two seasons old. Just open.

• One lid covers half a cupboard. The medium size fits seven different Rambler models, from the 10 oz Lowball to the 25 oz Straw Mug. If you've got two or three tumblers from the same family at home, you're never buying a lid for just one of them.
• Three parts, one minute. Pull off the slider, lift the seal out of its groove, rinse the lid body. That's all there is, and that's all it needs. Take it apart once a week and the coffee still smells of coffee two years on.
• Hot up to 85 °C, cold for as long as you like. YETI rates the lid up to 85 °C. Anything freshly brewed is hotter than that, so give it a minute to settle. After that it handles both, the espresso at six and the iced water at two.

Day-to-day from Detailing1: The most common mistake happens after washing up, not before. Snap the freshly rinsed lid together and put it straight back on, and you trap water in the groove under the seal. Four weeks later the coffee tastes musty, and nobody thinks to look for the cause in the lid. Take the seal out and let all three parts dry separately overnight. And never put the magnet loose in the dishwasher; it goes in the cutlery basket, or you'll be fishing it out of the filter.

The MagSlider replacement lid makes your tumbler whole again in two seconds

An open tumbler without a lid goes into the cupboard and never comes out again. The replacement lid pushes on, it doesn't screw on, and after that the tumbler is back to what it was before.

The movement is always the same. Set the lid on the rim and press briefly until it sits all the way round. Then the slider glides over the opening with a short click. After two weeks you're doing it half in the dark next to the car without looking, your other hand on the door handle.

That's exactly what it's built for. The tumbler sits in the cup holder on the drive there, then on the folding table at the open tailgate, then on the edge of the boot while someone next door pops the bonnet. You drink in between, one-handed, without taking the lid off. No thread to fiddle with first.

The slider itself is the part people underestimate. It's held on magnetically and pulls off completely, which means two things. First, you can get at everything when you clean it. Second, one day it'll end up under the driver's seat if you forget it while washing up. That's why a lot of people end up on this page.

In the paddock you see the same scene all day. Two sessions off, the tumbler sits on the tyre box, someone walks past and knocks it with an elbow. The slider is shut, the tumbler doesn't tip, nothing happens. Incidentally, that same casualness is also why a lid goes missing sooner or later. You don't think about it when you put it down, and even less when you pack up.

The size follows the rim, not the volume

The most common wrong buy happens because people order by millilitres. But the lid goes by the diameter of the opening, and that has little to do with capacity.

Small fits the 6 oz Espresso Cup, the 8 oz Stackable Cup, the 10 oz Wine Tumbler and the 10 oz Tumbler. Two ten-ounce vessels, one small lid, makes sense so far.

Medium fits the 10 oz Lowball, the 10 oz Stackable Mug, the 16 oz Stackable Cup, the 20 oz Stackable Cup, the 24 oz Mug, the 20 oz Tumbler and the 25 oz Straw Mug. And this is where the logic flips. The Lowball holds ten ounces like the Wine Tumbler, but its mouth is noticeably wider, so it needs the medium lid.

Large fits the 14 oz Stackable Mug, the 30 oz Stackable Cup, the 30 oz Tumbler, the 35 oz Straw Mug and the 42 oz Straw Mug. Same trap here: 14 ounces need the large lid, 16 ounces the medium. If you're not sure, hold the old lid up against it or measure the opening.

Two quick checks before you order save you sending it back. First, if the old lid is still around, put it next to the size list and compare. Second, if it's gone, measure the outside diameter of the tumbler's rim with a ruler and go by that, not by the volume. If you've got a 14 oz mug and a 16 oz cup in the cupboard, you need two different lids, even though the two look almost identical side by side.

It doesn't fit Rambler bottles, the jugs or the Travel Mugs with the Stronghold closure at all. They have a screw thread instead of a push-on rim, and no amount of measuring changes that.

And then there's the second limit, which YETI itself puts on every product page. This lid isn't leakproof. It stops splashes while the tumbler stands. Put it in a rucksack and it leaks, right at the edge of the slider. If your tumbler stays upright, this is your lid. If it has to ride on its side, go for the travel mug with Stronghold closure, which is built for exactly that.

A spare lid in the glovebox is cheaper than a new tumbler

The lid is the first part of a YETI to show its age. The stainless steel underneath survives years on boot lips and folding tables; the clear plastic on top doesn't keep pace.

After two or three seasons you can see it. Fine scratches from stacking, a slight grey haze where the slider has run over it a thousand times, and a ring in the seal groove that a quick rinse never quite shifts. By then the tumbler looks better than its lid, and that's the point where most people reorder.

Who it's worth it for is quickly said. Anyone who takes their tumbler out with them instead of leaving it on the desk. If you only use it at home, you rarely lose a lid. If you load it in the morning, put it down at a meet and unpack it in the evening, you'll lose one eventually. It's not a question of if, but when.

It's not meant for anyone looking for a proper seal. If you carry your drink sideways in a rucksack, a screw closure will serve you better, however well the slider fits. And if you've only lost the magnet, it's worth knowing that YETI doesn't sell it separately in Germany. Then the whole lid is the pragmatic way back.

The first thing to go on a lid like this is the seal. After lots of hot dishwasher cycles it hardens and no longer beds into the groove quite as snugly. You notice it when the lid stops earlier as you push it on and rattles ever so slightly in the cup holder. That's why YETI's own care page says lids belong on the top rack, away from the heating element. Stick to that and you'll push the next replacement lid noticeably further down the road.

The tip no product page gives you: don't order one, order two. The second one lives in the glovebox or the toolbox, for good. Because the lid doesn't go missing at home, it goes missing out and about, and out there a spare lid in the kitchen cupboard is precisely no use to you. Caring for the YETI MagSlider replacement lid

Take it apart into three pieces once a week

After every use, give it a quick rinse under warm water with the slider open so the opening gets rinsed too. That's the daily routine, and it takes ten seconds.

Once a week, the lid comes apart. Pull the magnetic slider off upwards; it's only held on by the magnet. Then grip the rubber seal from the side with two fingers and lift it out of the groove. That leaves three parts.

Soak all three parts in warm soapy water. Clean out the groove the seal sits in and the area under the slider with a soft brush, because that's exactly where gunk builds up. Stubborn rings come off with a little vinegar. In the dishwasher, the lid body goes on the top rack, the magnet and seal in the cutlery basket.

Then let all the parts dry completely, ideally overnight and apart from each other. Only then press the seal back into the groove and put the slider back on. You'll find matching tumblers for the lid among the insulated tumblers with MagSlider lid.

Good to know: The lid isn't leakproof; it stops splashes as long as the tumbler stands upright. For carrying it on its side, the travel mug with Stronghold closure is the right choice. YETI rates the lid up to 85 °C, so let freshly brewed coffee settle for a minute. It doesn't fit Rambler bottles, jugs or Travel Mugs with a screw thread. Don't store it pushed onto a damp tumbler; keep it off and dry, or water will sit in the seal groove. YETI gives a five-year warranty against defects in materials and workmanship.
