What is the YETI Roadie 8? YETI's smallest hard-shell cool box, built for a single day at the meet and for two people. Not meant for multi-day trips, for keeping food above the ice or for long walks over your shoulder.

The YETI Roadie 8 is YETI's smallest hard-shell cool box, for people who load drinks in the morning and want to pull them out still cold in the late afternoon. 7.6 litres, three and a half kilos empty, carried in one hand. It sits next to the folding table at the open tailgate, not at a lakeside camp.

Ten past six in the car park, the sun still low over the warehouse roofs. You packed it last night. At half two, when the place is emptying and only three cars are left, you open it for the seventh time and take out something that's still cold. That one day is the yardstick the box was built to.

• One click and it's shut. A single latch in the middle, not a pair you flip one after the other. You push it down with your thumb while your other hand holds the flask or the tailgate. On a long day you do that twenty times, and twenty times you don't need a second hand.
• Fits where nothing else will. 7.6 litres, that's twelve cans. The box sits in the passenger footwell when the boot is long since full, and in the storage bay of a golf cart. You carry it by a fixed handle, in one hand, over the ten metres from the car to the folding table.
• Stays where you put it. The feet grip the boot sill, even when you pull away briskly. On a flatbed or in a trailer, use the two slots on the sides and strap it down. Empty it weighs three and a half kilos, packed it doesn't even start to slide.

Detailing1's tip from the shop: The most common mistake happens around midday. The first meltwater is sitting in the bottom, someone opens the lid and tips it out because the cans shouldn't sit in water. That throws away the last four hours of the day. Cold water keeps the rest cold for much longer than the warm air that would otherwise rush in. You tip it out in the evening on the way home, not at midday, and it takes two seconds, because the box has no drain plug.

Pack it the night before and just load it in the morning

The Roadie 8 gets pre-chilled and packed the evening before, not on the morning you leave. Load it warm and you throw away half the ice life before the engine's even running.

The ritual takes ten minutes and runs the same way every time. In the evening, a bag of ice into the empty box, lid shut, into the coolest corner of the garage. The drinks go in the fridge the same evening, not out of the crate next to the radiator in the morning. Before you leave, old ice out, fresh ice in, cans in between.

Fill the gaps as far as you can. YETI recommends two parts ice to one part contents for its coolers, and at 7.6 litres you really notice the difference between half full and brim full. Even if you're only taking four cans, add enough ice that nothing rattles around.

On the drive it sits in the passenger footwell or crossways in the back, and on a load bed you strap it down through the two slots. Once you arrive, it goes next to the folding table at the open tailgate, in the car's shadow rather than on black metal in the sun. Shade is the cheapest move of the whole day.

Then the lid. One latch, thumb down, a quick click, done. It works one-handed while the other hand holds the cup, and that's the movement you repeat all day at a meet. You get to the ice cleanly with the ice scoop instead of plunging in up to your wrist every time.

Twelve cans or four kilos of ice and never both

The Roadie 8 holds twelve cans or four kilos of ice. The word in between is or, and in practice you pack six cans and two kilos and it's full.

For two people on a summer's day, that's just right. For four people it lasts until midday, then someone has to make a run. If you're planning a whole weekend, or driving the weekend car to a meet two days away, you're better off with the Roadie 15 and its twenty-two cans than spending three days annoyed about the box you didn't take.

Let's be honest about the limits so nobody's surprised later. It has no drain plug, so you tip the meltwater out. It's too shallow to keep food cleanly above the ice, so the sandwich goes in a tub. And empty it weighs three and a half kilos, more than any cool bag of the same size.

On ice life, better cautious than bold. In a real-world test the ice lasted three and a half days, but pre-chilled, in the shade and opened only once. YETI itself deliberately doesn't give a number of days, because the amount of ice, the sun and how often you open the lid change everything. For one day at the meet with seven openings, it doesn't break a sweat.

Then three points that get lost in the spec sheet. The padded shoulder strap for the Roadie 8 is a YETI accessory and isn't included with the box, you carry it by the fixed handle. Upright and latched, what's inside stays inside, but I wouldn't transport it lying down in the boot. And the five-year warranty covers defects in materials and workmanship, not scratches and not fading.

That makes for a clear decision. If you want to keep drinks cold and carry the box ten metres between the car and the folding table, the Roadie 8 is right. If you want to sling it over your shoulder and actually cover some ground, take the lighter cool bag with shoulder strap. If it's about lunch rather than a drinks supply, the tote-style Daytrip Box will do.

After three summers in the boot it looks untouched

After three summers in the boot, the lid on the Roadie 8 closes just like on day one. It picks up scratches, but nothing pops open and nothing catches.

The wall is moulded in one piece, there's no seam to come apart and no corner to split. That's the difference from the DIY-store box whose hinge starts catching after one season and whose lid sits crooked by the second summer. YETI gives five years on defects in materials and workmanship, and the scratches stay cosmetic.

One thing still makes us wince, and it has nothing to do with the box. The feet are non-slip and don't mark when used properly. What's underneath them definitely does. A grain of sand between the foot and the boot sill draws a line when you slide it, and then you're polishing that out.

So our order is: blanket on the sill first, then the box on top, and never drag it across the paint, lift it. Two seconds of extra effort versus half an hour with the polisher on a black boot sill where every scratch shows up in raking light.

Who it's for is quick to say. For anyone who's in a car park at six in the morning more than three times a year, with a folding table, blanket and chair in the boot. Ten colourways, one size. Not for anyone feeding a family at the lake, and not for anyone who has to carry their kit over a kilometre. The rest of the range is in the YETI category.

One last move no manufacturer puts front and centre, and it costs nothing. Store it open. After the last meet in October, rinse it out, let it dry and stand it in the corner with the lid ajar. A closed box that stays damp all winter smells at the gasket in April, and then you need warm water with a splash of bleach at six to one and half an hour of patience. Two minutes in October saves you that.

Caring for the YETI Roadie 8

Pre-chill it the evening before the trip: a bag of ice into the empty box, lid shut, somewhere cool. In the morning, old ice out, fresh ice in, two parts ice to one part contents, and fill the gaps.

During the day, keep it in the shade and open the lid as little as possible. The meltwater stays in, it keeps the rest cold longer than the warm air that would otherwise rush in. Tip it out in the evening, there's no drain plug.

After the trip, wash it out with soap and warm water. If it smells, use warm water with a splash of bleach at six to one and a sponge, then rinse with clean water.

Notes: Always let it dry and store it with the lid ajar, otherwise the gasket will smell come spring. Don't transport it lying down. You get to the ice cleanly with the ice scoop.
