Cold drinks without taking over half the boot

What is the YETI Hopper Flip 8? The smallest cool bag in the Hopper range, sized for one person and one day. Six cans plus ice, sealed tight, carried over your shoulder. Not for the group round the folding table, not for dry ice, not for submerging.

The YETI Hopper Flip 8 is YETI's small cool bag for anyone who sets off alone in the morning and still wants to pull something cold out of the car in the afternoon. A cube of roughly 29 by 20 by 27 centimetres, just over 1.3 kilos empty, with a detachable neoprene strap. It sits in the passenger footwell, not across half the boot.

Six in the morning, the car park is still empty, and you set the cube down next to the folding table by the open tailgate. At two, when the sun is beating straight down on the tarmac and the guy parked next to you pulls a lukewarm bottle out of his rucksack, your hand goes into ice. That's all this bag sets out to do.

  • Six cans, and the footwell stays usable. Roughly 29 by 20 by 27 centimetres, about the footprint of a shoebox. Six 330 ml cans fit inside with ice, eleven without. The cube stands in front of the passenger seat and doesn't topple over there, not even on a roundabout.
  • The meltwater stays inside. The wraparound HydroLok zip is leakproof once it's fully closed. Up to 4.5 kilos of ice can turn to water over the day and the boot lip stays dry. No dark patch on the boot carpet when you unload in the evening.
  • A strap that comes off in five seconds. Empty it weighs just over 1.3 kilos; fully packed you're at about six. The padded neoprene strap goes on for the thirty metres across the gravel and comes off again afterwards. Up front sits the HitchPoint grid for a bottle opener, a carabiner or a SideKick case.

Day-to-day from Detailing1: The smallest bag in the range has a problem the big ones don't. It gets opened constantly. Six cans means every other question at the table ends with a hand in the bag, and by the fifth time the ice at the front has turned to water.

The fix costs nothing. Take the first can out first thing in the morning and park it outside the bag, in the cup holder or on the folding table. That gives you two hours with a drink in hand without touching the zip. Open the Flip 8 three times between eleven and three instead of ten, and there'll still be ice in it come evening.

Six cans, plenty of ice, and then it stays shut

The Hopper Flip 8 takes six 330 ml cans plus ice. How long they stay cold is decided the evening before, not on the morning of the meet.

YETI doesn't quote a figure in hours for the Hopper range and is upfront about why. Too many factors come into play, the manufacturer says in so many words, so any specific number would be misleading. What you get instead is a formula: twice as much ice as contents, by volume. Everything goes in pre-chilled, nothing at room temperature.

At this size that isn't a fine point, it's the whole difference. A six-can bag doesn't leave much in reserve. Gaps get filled, with a folded towel or an extra bottle of water if need be. The meltwater stays in rather than being tipped out halfway through, because cold water beats warm air.

In the morning you grab it by the handle, put it in the passenger footwell and leave it there. At the meet it goes in the shade of the open tailgate, not next to the front tyre on black tarmac. According to the manufacturer, ice lasts up to twice as long in the shade as in full sun.

The strap goes on the Flip 8 more often than on its bigger siblings, because you actually carry this one instead of just setting it down. Fully packed it's about six kilos, and on the walk from the far end of the car park to the table that sits more comfortably on your shoulder than hanging from the handle. Take the strap off at the table, or it just gets in the way.

All of this is backed by real-world reports, not manufacturer promises. One long-term tester reports ice lasting over 48 hours in the Flip 8 on a weekend trip. Treeline Review had the bigger Flip out at over 32 degrees in direct sun and still found about half the cubes intact after twenty hours. The coffee for the drive over goes in the insulated tumbler alongside it.

The Hopper Flip 8 is a portion for one

Six cans plus ice is one day for one person. If there are two of you or you're bringing food, the Flip 8 simply won't cover what you need.

Three numbers do the rounds for this bag, and all three are right. Six cans with enough ice, eleven cans with no ice at all, or 4.5 kilos of pure ice with nothing else in it. If you've got the eleven in your head and then add ice, you'll come up short. Several testers write the same line: smaller than expected. The insulation is thick, so 29 centimetres on the outside is a good deal less on the inside.

That's why size is the real buying decision. If you head out early on your own and are back home by evening, take the Flip 8. If there are two of you or sandwiches and fruit are coming along, take the next size up with room for twelve cans. If you need a second seat in the paddock, a hard box like the Roadie 8 is the more honest buy.

Below it sits the Daytrip line. The Lunch Bag and Lunch Box are lunch for one day and run on an ice pack rather than loose ice. The Flip 8 is the smallest size you can tip kilos of ice into without mopping anything up in the evening.

And the limits, spelled out honestly so nobody gets caught out later. There are no outside pockets, so anything that has to stay dry goes elsewhere. Loaded high and set down on a slope, it tips. The zip runs tight; you need both hands and a firm pull. It's leakproof when fully closed, but it isn't a container you can submerge. YETI explicitly rules out dry ice, and the washing machine, tumble dryer and bleach too. The warranty is three years, not the five you get on Rambler drinkware.

For solo drivers, not the group round the folding table

The YETI Hopper Flip 8 earns its keep if you set off early and alone more than three times a year and have no room for a second box.

A cool bag lives a hard life in a car. It sits on hot tarmac, rides along next to sharp edges, gets wet, dusty, knocked about and crammed into corners. That's exactly where cheap bags give up. The seams pull apart, the liner tears along the fold, the closure goes slack, and after two summers there's a smell in there that no cleaner will shift.

The Flip 8's outer shell, by contrast, is a high-density welded fabric that you wipe down rather than wash. Treeline Review dragged a Hopper Flip around campsites, canoes and weekly shops for three years and reports no structural damage. It picks up scuffs, but nothing comes apart. Here in Nordhorn, one has been riding along in different cars since the spring and still looks like day one inside.

It's not for you if you're catering for a family at the lake, and not if you need a verified number of hours on the label, because YETI deliberately doesn't give one for the Hopper range. We stock it in two colourways, Classic Navy and Charcoal, in one size. Whatever else we carry from the brand is in the YETI category.

That's the link to everything else we sell. If you look after your car, you think in terms of surfaces that still look like day one years later, and you don't replace your kit every other summer. Same mindset, just on the boot floor instead of the paintwork. And on a practical level: what stays inside doesn't end up outside. No meltwater ring on the boot lip, no damp patch on the leather seat.

The one line no manufacturer prints on the box applies to the smallest size most of all. This bag doesn't die from the fabric, it dies from the zip, and it dies faster than the big ones because it gets opened more often. Sand in the teeth is the most common cause of failure, and every opening grinds it in deeper.

Give it a quick rinse with clean water after every outing, treat the zip to a thin film of lubricant a few times a year, and you'll still have it in ten years. Leave it gritty and force the zip, and after two seasons you've got a very expensive bag that won't close properly. Two minutes after every meet decide the rest.

Not sure about YETI Hopper Flip® 8 "Soft Cooler" Cool Bag (Small)? Get it explained:

How much fits in the YETI Hopper Flip 8?

Six 330 ml cans with enough ice, according to YETI itself. With no ice at all it's eleven cans; filled with nothing but ice, about 4.5 kilos. That's enough for a long day on your own; for two it gets tight. If you've got the eleven in your head and then add ice, you'll be disappointed.

How long does ice last in the Hopper Flip 8?

YETI deliberately doesn't give a figure in hours for the Hopper range and considers such claims misleading itself, because too many factors come into play. One long-term tester reports ice lasting over 48 hours in the Flip 8 on a weekend trip; with the bigger Flip, Treeline Review still found about half the cubes intact after twenty hours in full sun. What really counts is how you pack: twice as much ice as contents, everything pre-chilled, and then keep it shut.

Hopper Flip 8 or Hopper Flip 12?

It comes down to whether you drive alone. The Flip 8 takes six cans plus ice and is a portion for one person and one day. As soon as someone rides along or sandwiches and fruit come into it, the Flip 12 with twelve cans is the right buy. You can't upgrade later; size is the real buying decision.

Does meltwater leak out of the cool bag?

Not as long as the HydroLok zip is fully closed. That's exactly what it's built for. Up to 4.5 kilos of ice can turn to water over the day and the boot lip stays dry. Even so, you shouldn't submerge the bag.

Why is the zip so stiff?

Because it's leakproof. Every test of the range describes it as tight; you need both hands and a firm pull. Forcing it is the one mistake you mustn't make. Rinse the sand out with clean water after every use and give it a thin coat of lubricant a few times a year, and it'll keep running smoothly. Sand in the teeth is the most common cause of failure.

Does it come with a shoulder strap?

Yes, the padded neoprene strap is included and detachable. On the smallest size it gets used more than on the big ones, because you actually carry the bag instead of setting it down. There are no outside pockets, but up front you get the HitchPoint grid for a bottle opener, a carabiner or a SideKick case.

How do I clean the cool bag properly?

Washing-up liquid and water, rinse with clean water, wipe the inside dry. After that, leave the zip open for several days until everything is bone dry. No washing machine, no tumble dryer, no bleach. If it smells, dry bicarbonate of soda left in the closed bag for two days does the trick.

Can I use dry ice?

No. YETI explicitly rules out dry ice for all Hopper Soft Coolers, because pressure can build up inside the sealed bag. If you need dry ice, a hard cooler is the way to go.

How big is the Hopper Flip 8 and how much does it weigh?

Roughly 29 by 20 by 27 centimetres on the outside, about the footprint of a shoebox, and just over 1.3 kilos empty. Fully packed you end up at about six kilos. The insulation is thick, so there's noticeably less room inside than the outside dimensions suggest. Several testers call it smaller than expected.

How long is the warranty on the Hopper Flip 8?

Three years against defects in materials and workmanship, for the original purchaser. That's the Hopper Soft Cooler warranty, not to be confused with the five years YETI gives on Rambler drinkware and Hard Coolers. Normal wear and tear and commercial use are excluded.

Just ask us. Daniel will help you.

Using the YETI Hopper Flip 8

Pre-chill at night, load up in the morning, keep it shut all day

The day starts the evening before. Drinks and food go in the fridge, the empty bag in the coolest corner of the garage. Load room-temperature cans in the morning and, at this size, you've given away half the cold-holding time before the engine's even running.

When packing, go by YETI's maths: twice as much ice as contents, by volume. Six 330 ml cans plus ice fit inside; without ice it's eleven, and it holds up to 4.5 kilos of pure ice. Fill the gaps, with a folded towel if need be, because air is where the cold escapes. Block ice lasts longer than cubed ice; a mix of both works best.

Close the HydroLok zip all the way with both hands; only then does the meltwater stay inside. On the road the bag sits in the passenger footwell, and at the meet in the shade of the open tailgate rather than next to the front tyre in the sun. According to the manufacturer, ice lasts up to twice as long there. For the thirty metres across the gravel the neoprene strap goes on, and at the table it comes off again.

After the day, wipe it out with washing-up liquid and water, rinse with clean water and dry the inside with a cloth. Then leave the zip open for several days until everything is bone dry. Before you put it away, give the zip a thin film of lubricant on the front and back and wipe off any excess.

Good to know: No dry ice; YETI explicitly rules it out for all Hopper Soft Coolers. No washing machine, no tumble dryer, no bleach. The bag is leakproof when fully closed, but you shouldn't submerge it. If it already smells, put one or two cups of dry bicarbonate of soda in a shallow dish inside the closed bag for two days, then wash it out again with warm water. Store it fully dried and closed. If you regularly travel as a pair or bring food along, the next cool bag up is the better bet. The warranty is three years against defects in materials and workmanship, not the five years on Rambler drinkware.
