What is the YETI Hopper Flip 18? YETI's large cool bag for the whole crew round the folding table: twenty cans plus ice, and the meltwater stays inside. Not made for dry ice, not for submerging, and too big now for the footwell behind the passenger seat.

The YETI Hopper Flip 18 is YETI's large cool bag for people who don't just load up for themselves in the morning, but for half the crew. Eighteen litres, just over two kilos empty, about forty-one centimetres wide. It sits in the open boot next to the folding table, and by mid-afternoon it's the only one at the meet still handing out anything cold.

Six in the morning, the car park is slowly filling up, and you slide it over the boot lip to the back. By eleven it's sitting in the shade of the open tailgate, the neoprene strap slung over the lid handle. And at some point in the afternoon a third mate wanders over and asks if there's anything left. There is.

• Twenty cans with ice, thirty without. That's the whole difference from its smaller sibling, and it's the difference between packing for yourself and packing for the crew. Fill it with nothing but ice and it takes twelve kilos. For a day with four of you round the folding table, this is the first size where nobody has to do the maths.
• The meltwater stays inside. The wraparound HydroLok zip is leakproof once it's fully closed. Twelve kilos of ice can turn to water over the day and the boot floor stays dry. One real-world test left the bag out through two days of a heatwave and reported no leaks afterwards.
• Fully loaded, it's a good fourteen kilos. That's why the padded neoprene shoulder strap comes with it, and why you'll genuinely need it here, unlike with the smaller sizes. Add two side handles for lifting and a lid handle for the last five metres. Up front sits the HitchPoint grid for a bottle opener, a carabiner or a SideKick case.

Day-to-day from Detailing1: The most common mistake with the 18 is packing it like the 12. Same bag of ice as always, cans on top, zip it shut, and then you wonder why there's nothing but water in there by two o'clock. Eighteen litres of space need more ice, not the same amount.

YETI's rule of thumb is twice as much ice as contents, by volume. And because the big shell soaks up cold itself the first time you fill it, the manufacturer explicitly recommends a sacrificial load of ice a few hours beforehand, which you tip out again before packing. Two ice packs on the bottom, cubed ice on top, gaps filled with an extra bottle of water. Then it does exactly what you bought it for.

Twenty cans with ice, and then it stays shut

A cool bag doesn't chill anything down; it only holds on to what you put in. With eighteen litres, how things look in the afternoon is decided the evening before, in your kitchen.

YETI doesn't quote a figure in hours for the Hopper range, and we're not about to make one up. The manufacturer even spells out why: too many variables, from the type and amount of ice to the sun beating down on the lid. What it gives you instead is a method. Everything goes in pre-chilled, nothing at room temperature. Gaps get filled. The meltwater stays in.

In the morning you grab it by the side handles and slide it flat into the boot, not onto the back seat and not into the footwell. At the meet it goes in the shade of the open tailgate, not next to the front tyre on black tarmac. According to the manufacturer, ice lasts up to twice as long in the shade as in full sun.

For the walk from the far end of the car park to the table, the neoprene strap goes on. With twenty cans and ice it weighs a good fourteen kilos, and that belongs on your shoulder, not hanging off the lid handle. Take the strap off again at the table, or it just gets in the way and drags across the paintwork.

And then it stays shut. That's harder to stick to with the big one than with the small one, because more hands go in. Open it every twenty minutes and there'll be nothing cold left by three. For the meets around Nordhorn we pack it the night before, open it for the first time around eleven and maybe five times after that.

Independent tests back this up. Mountain Weekly News still found about eighty-five per cent of the ice intact twenty-six hours after packing, with less than two centimetres of water in the bottom. OutdoorCrunch quotes up to thirty-six hours in ideal conditions and says in the same breath that a hard cooler does better over several days.

Eighteen litres won't fit behind the passenger seat any more

The Flip 18 isn't just a bigger Flip 12; it's a different call altogether. You trade easy handling for capacity, and you feel that trade in the boot, not at the folding table.

About forty-one centimetres wide, thirty-three high, twenty-seven deep. That's a proper chunk of boot space, not something you wedge into a gap. The compact cool bag from the same range squeezes in behind the passenger seat, between the toolbox and the tyre bag. The 18 wants a spot of its own. If your boot is a game of Tetris, take the small one. If someone regularly ends up empty-handed in the evening, take this one.

Soft is still soft, even at this size. It gives, it squashes flat when empty, and it's not a seat. If you need a solid box in the paddock that you can sit on or rest a camera on, the hard cooler is the better bet. And for several days on the trot, a hard box is the more honest tool anyway.

We're honest about the small annoyances too, so nobody gets caught out later. There are no outside pockets, so anything that has to stay dry goes elsewhere or into a SideKick case on the HitchPoint grid. Loaded high and set down on a slope, it tips over more easily than the smaller sizes; that's the price of thirty-three centimetres of height.

It's leakproof when fully closed, but it isn't a container you can submerge. YETI explicitly rules out dry ice for every Hopper. Same goes for the washing machine and the oven. And the warranty is three years against defects in materials and workmanship, not the five years you get on Rambler drinkware.

For the one who always brings the drinks

The Hopper Flip 18 earns its keep if you don't head out alone. If two mates jump in with you on a Sunday morning and you don't want to be counting cans come evening.

A cool bag lives a hard life in a car. It sits on hot tarmac, rides along next to sharp edges, gets wet, dusty, knocked about and crammed into corners. That's exactly where cheap bags give up. The seams pull apart, the liner tears along the fold, the closure goes slack, and after two summers there's a smell in there that no cleaner will shift.

The Flip 18's outer shell, by contrast, is a high-density welded fabric that you wipe down rather than wash. Treeline Review dragged Hopper Flips around campsites, canoes and kayaks for three years, the 18 on a canoe trip in Maine among others, and reports no structural damage. It picks up scuffs, but nothing comes apart.

It's not for you if you're heading out solo with a sandwich and two bottles; it's too big and too wide for that. Not if you want to keep things cold for three days straight. And not if you need a verified number of hours on the label, because YETI doesn't give one for the Hopper range. Four colourways from us, one size. The one line no manufacturer prints on the box: this bag doesn't die from the fabric, it dies from the zip. It runs tight; you need both hands and a firm pull. The newer version is better than its reputation, but it'll never be easy, and it isn't meant to be.

Give it a quick rinse with clean water after every outing to get the sand and dust out, treat it to a thin film of lubricant a few times a year, and it'll still be going in ten years. Leave it gritty and force it, and after two seasons you've got a very expensive bag that won't close properly. Two minutes after every meet decide the rest.

Hopper Flip 18 or Hopper Flip 12?

It's not a question of litres, it's a question of boot space. The 12 squeezes in behind the passenger seat, between the toolbox and the tyre bag. The 18 is about forty-one centimetres wide and wants its own spot in the boot. If you mostly drive alone or as a pair, take the 12. If someone regularly ends up empty-handed in the evening, take the 18.

Can I use dry ice?

No. YETI rules out dry ice for all Hopper Soft Coolers, because pressure can build up inside the sealed bag. If you need dry ice, a hard cooler is the way to go.

How long is the warranty on the Hopper Flip 18?

Three years against defects in materials and workmanship, for the original purchaser. That's the Hopper Soft Cooler warranty, not to be confused with the five years YETI gives on Rambler drinkware and Hard Coolers. Normal wear and tear and commercial use are excluded.

At this size there's an extra step you can skip with the smaller models: YETI recommends filling the bag with a sacrificial load of ice a few hours beforehand and tipping it out again before you pack. The big shell soaks up cold itself on the first fill, and otherwise that's cold you'll be missing in the afternoon.

When packing, go by YETI's maths: twice as much ice as chilled contents, by volume. After the day, wipe it out with washing-up liquid and water, rinse with clean water and dry the inside thoroughly with a cloth. Then leave the zip open for several days until everything is bone dry. Before you put it away, give the zip a thin film of lubricant on the front and back and wipe off any excess.

Good to know: No dry ice; YETI rules it out for all Hopper Soft Coolers. No washing machine, no oven to dry it. The bag is leakproof when fully closed, but you shouldn't submerge it.
